The keelboat carried 20,000 pounds of supplies.

    The Yakton Tribe was friendly because they wanted guns which they did not get.

    From December 21 to 1804-April 06, 1805 the Expedition stayed at Fort Mandan and traded for goods peacefully. The Mandan and Hidatsa villages near the fort were "the central market place of the Northern Plains." It attracted Europeans and Indians. You could trade for horses, mules, clothing, guns, corn and other vegetables.

    BearOn April 29 1805 Lewis wounded two bears. One of the bears he was trying to kill got away. The other wounded bear chased him the length of a football field while he was trying to reload. He shot it and it died. Lewis could have easily been killed. "the other after my firing on him pursued me seventy or eighty yards, but fortunately had been so badly wounded that he was unable to pursue so closely as to prevent my charging my gun; we again repeated our fir and killed him."

    The Near Death of Sacagawea and Tree Bark “The Indian woman verry bad … if She dies it will be the fault of her husband …”—William Clark, June 1805 Sacagawea was very sick with symptoms of gonorrhea. Clark attempted to help her by prescribing the wrong cures. When Lewis returned from a short exploratory trip he prescribed doses of bark and opium, sulfur and iron water which cured her.

    York and ClarkClark wrote that they reached the rim of the canyon “safe where I found my servent in serch of us greatly agitated, for our wellfar.” Weather influenced the Expedition when Clark, Sacagewea, her son and husband were washed away in a flash flood in the Missouri River what is now Great Falls, Montana. Even though he was Clark’s slave York risked his life to find them. It all turned out well Clark finding York searching for them.

    Shooting Link The expedition met 8 Blackfoots who were the fiercest of the tribes. Lewis gave them gifts and told them he would give guns to their enemies if they were not peaceful and asked them to camp with him. That night they tried to steal guns and horses. 1 Indian was stabbed and Clark shot another one, both died. They immediately broke camp and left the Blackfoot’s area. Lewis:" had pursued into the nitch one lay dead"
