    Congress, fueled by Seward, agreed to buy Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million.
    For many years following this purchase, the US saw it as having no value hence the nickname “Seward’s Folly” or “Seward’s Icebox”
  • US goes to War with Spain in Cuba (pg.413)

    Following the sinking of the “Maine”, president McKinley fell under the public pressure and issued the War statement to Congress. He offered 4 reasons for the US to intervene in the Cuban Revolution:
    1.) “Put an end to the barbarities, bloodshed, starvation, and horrible miseries” (in Cuba)
    2.) Protect the Citizens of the US in Cuba
    3.) (End) “the very serious injury to the commerce, trade, and business of our people”
    4.) (End) “the constant menace to our peace” arising from disorder in Cuba

    The Treaty of Paris, including the annexation of the Philippines, came to a vote and was approved in congress. The people of the Philippines were outraged but couldn’t do anything about it. Spain gave up all ownership of Cuba, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines to The US.

    To prevent the US from losing lucrative trade routes in China, John Hay dispatched a diplomatic note asking the nations involved in trade with China to accept an open door policy. Since none of the nations declined, the concept was accepted.
