How I came to be

  • Birth

    Birth
I was born on this day. This is a huge part of who I am because I came to the world on this day and started to experience a lot of things. I feel very privileged to be born at this time and into a Christian family, where I was able to learn about Christ since a young age.
  • Grandparent's Neighbors

Every year, I go to Australia to visit my grandparents. This year, I found out that they had new neighbors, so I went over to their house and greeted them. There were two kids around my age, and I quickly became friends with them and went over to their house every day. I even invited them to my christmas party and we had a really fun time together. This event made me more confident and realize how easy it is to make friends. All it takes is for me to step out of my confort zone and say hi.
  • Accident during Volleyball Practice

    Accident during Volleyball Practice
During a volleyball practice, I was running to the ball when I tripped and landed on my wrist. I fractured my wrist and couldn't play volleyball for the rest of the year. It was pretty hard to do normal things without using my left hand. From this experience, I learned to be persistent and to not give up. Later in life when I faced troubles, I could look back at this event and remember to have the determination and to also think of clever ways to solve my problems.
  • Learning Ambassadors Leader Election

    Learning Ambassadors Leader Election
In 5th grade at my old school, I was nominated to be elected for the leader of the Learning Ambassadors. I had to prepare for my speech and also advertise myself during recess. Thankfully, a few of my good friends also helped me shout slogans and tried to convince others. That was my first big experience of being a leader and I learned a lot from that event. I learned to be more confident and also learned how to promote myself, which greatly helped during my Investment Club plug at ICS.
  • 8th Grade WWW

This WWW was one of my best WWW experiences. Previously, I was super shy and all the teachers probably knew me as the kid who doesn't talk. But for some reason, during this WWW, I willingly answered the questions during discussion time and even volunteered to pray. After that, I realized that praying for others is actually really nice and it's not that scary to answer questions. I learned to speak up more and be more assertive, which helps me a lot later on with my leadership positions.
  • 1st Lesson of Concert Choir

    1st Lesson of Concert Choir
This was my first day in Concert Choir (top choir in the Hong Kong Children's Choir). A few years ago, when I got into the second top choir, I used to be quite prideful and there were even instances when I looked down on other people. However, after getting into this choir, they taught us that humility is very important. The choir conductor had a huge speech about that and I remember feeling really bad for being prideful before and was determined to change.
  • Investment Club

I became the leader of Investment Club this school year. I had to take up a lot of responsibilities, such as preparing information for the meetings and making sure that my club members are having fun. I also improved a lot in public speaking since I am a shy person and used to get really nervous if I had to speak in front of people. I also learned other good traits from this experience, such as time management, assertiveness, problem-solving skills, and even developed a passion.
  • 10th Grade Camp

Usually, during the talks at camp, I would be completely bored out and feel sleepy. However, I feel like this year's camp really moved my heart. I was able to concentrate through all the talks and really ponder on the messages. I think this was one of the turning points in my spiritual life because I became a lot more interested in getting to know God and even started to do daily devotions afterward. I was also able to have some heartfelt conversations with my friends and we grew a lot closer.
  • 16th Vida Nueva

    16th Vida Nueva
At first, I was quite skeptical and didn't want to join after I heard we won't be allowed to look at the time. However, after experiencing it, I could confidently say that this is going to be one of my favorite memories from high school. I was able to share my problems, ones that I never told anyone before, and I really felt like the burden was lifted off my shoulder. I was able to experience God in a way that I usually don't and I think I grew closer to Him through this event.
  • Shadowing at Monash Children's Hospital

    Shadowing at Monash Children's Hospital
This was a very meaningful and educational experience. I was able to see a lot of interesting cases and learn the procedures of a post-op check-up. More importantly, I learned if I have the heart and ability to help people, I should do it. All the doctors and nurses there were so hard working and nice, and it made me want to become like them. It also made me realize that I actually really enjoy working with kids, as I felt really happy and warm when the kids cheered up after i blew some bubbles.
  • Kathy Fok (choir conductor)

She is my choir conductor. She impacted me and affected me as a person throughout my experience in the choir. In the first lesson, she taught us that we should be responsible, respectful, humble, and passionate, and she kept on reminding us throughout the year. Her words really stuck with me because I was quite prideful before getting into this choir. Now, my thoughts are more positive and I no longer look down on people like how I did a few years ago.
  • Mary Wu (piano teacher)

I've been taking piano lessons from Dr. Wu since 3rd grade. She affected me a lot into becoming who I am today because she has really great character and she teaches me through her actions. She is also a Christian and is someone I look up to. Even though she is one of the top pianists, she is very humble and super nice. I learned that I should be humble and always have a joyful and positive attitude. I also learned that I should be assertive instead of aggressive/ passive.
  • Mark Lung (percussion teacher)

I have been taking percussion lessons from Mark Sir since 6th grade. He really inspired me to strive for excellence and work hard. He had eczema since he was a kid and sometimes his hands would start bleeding from practicing because of that. nonetheless, he still persisted and eventually became one of the best percussionists in HK. I learned from him that hard work will pay off and practice will make me better, even if I don't seem to be making progress in a short time.
  • Mrs. Fong

Mrs. Fong is my tribe teacher, my roots leader, and she was also my mentorship leader. I learned a lot from her through my interactions with her. She is always really nice and never hesitates to help anyone. She stays very calm even if people are not cooperating, and gave me good advice on how to deal with my internal problems. She impacted me to become who I am today because I was able to grow a lot closer to God during our meetings and I also learned how to deal with negative feelings.
  • Eugene Chan

    Eugene Chan
Eugene was my table leader at Vida. He showed me that anyone could be a leader and also showed me a lot of good leadership traits such as being a good listener and wanting to help others succeed. We talked a lot after Vida and he helped me with finding my identity in Christ and getting out of the habit of always comparing myself to other people. He impacted me a lot since I was able to become a better Christian and also find joy in Christ.
  • Samuel Kwan

    Samuel Kwan
SK is our percussion section leader and he is also a 5th-grade band teaching assistant. He is always really nice to me and never hesitates to help me. He also helped me a lot with how to deal with stress. I learned a lot on how to be a good leader through spending time with him in Concert band and 5th-grade band. I learned that even though I should be a good listener, I should also be assertive and correct people when they're wrong or misbehaving so they could improve.
  • Helen Wong (Mom)

    Helen Wong (Mom)
My mom is definitely a leader at home. She keeps us in check and makes sure that we are not slacking off. Even though she is quite harsh sometimes, she does what she does because she loves us. I always tell her my problems and she gives a lot of good advice. She helped me a lot with realizing what I want to do and how I should deal with problems and stress. I learned a lot from her, especially communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Grandpa

    Grandpa
My grandpa is a leader in his company, and also a leader in our family. He is a quiet person, and so when he talks it's always an important message. I learned from him that even a quiet person, like me, can become a leader. He taught me a lot of life lessons and how to be a good person in general. I learned to be hardworking and humble from watching him work. He is a huge factor that affected me to become who I am today.
  • Mr. Cliff

I didn't really know Mr. Cliff until this year when I became the leader of Investment Club and he was my sponsoring teacher. From my first meeting with him, I learned that strong eye contact and a firm handshake are very crucial in order to make an impression and to show confidence. Before, I usually tried to solve all my problems on my own and didn't like asking other people for help. However, after Mr. Cliff gave me some great advice, I realized that I didn't have to do everything alone.
