History of Public Education

  • Ye Olde Deluder Satan Law

    Ye Olde Deluder Satan Law
In 1647, the "Ye Olde Deluder Satan" law was passed that required towns with over 50 households to hire and pay an instructor to teach all children to read and write, while towns with more than 100 households had to make a grammar school with a hired teacher to prepare children for college. I chose this event as important because it marked the first true instance of educational reform in the form of a law.
  • Four School Organization

    Four School Organization
Four types of schools were developed during the 1700's: Town Schools, Dame Schools, Latin Grammar Schools, and The Academy. I chose the development of these schools as important because it was one of the first attempts to organize education. The development of these different schools with different preparations and student populations helped pave the way for improved educational systems down the road.
  • Birth of Infant Schools, Public High School, and Supplementary Schools

Birth of Infant Schools, Public High School, and Supplementary Schools
During the 1800's, the infant school, public high school, and supplementary schools were born. I chose this as important because it was a reform that began to make education public, which is a huge triumph in education becoming a great equalizer. The aim of this was to include more students, but African Americans and Native Americans were left out because of assimilation difficulties.
  • The Cardinal Principles Report of 1918

The Cardinal Principles Report of 1918
The Cardinal Principles Report of 1918 called for a wider variety of high school programs in order to better serve differing secondary school populations. It suggested that educational inequality results when all students study the same courses. I see this as important because it helped education become more of an equalizer by allowing students to build their own academic plans based on their skills and interests.
  • Head Start

    Head Start
In 1965, Head Start was introduced for three to five year old children from low-income families the preparation necessary for school success. I chose this as important because my Minor is in Early Childhood Education. This definitely helps education become an equalizer because it reaches out to families in need to overcome socioeconomic obstacles in order to prepare children for school.
