    The reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is assassinated on April, 4th 1968. A well known leader in civil rights, King gave multiple speeches and spoke with government leaders on acceptance. -"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." Martin Luther King Jr.

    Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Citizens (PARC) v. Pennsylvania
    A federal court in Pennsylvania ruled that all students should be provided free education. Prior to this ruling, schools routinely did not permit children who had not "attained a mental age of 5 years".This was the first ruling of it's kind.
  • Indian Education Act of 1972

    Indian Education Act of 1972
    The first federal acknowledgement of the diversity in culture and education in Native Americans. The Indian Education Act established the Office of Indian Education and the National Advisory Council on Indian Education.
  • National Association of Bilingual Education is founded

    National Association of Bilingual Education is founded
    With more students speaking different languages, a non-profit association is established to advocate for multilingual families.
  • Refugee Education Assistance Act

    Refugee Education Assistance Act
    A mass migration of Cubans and Haitians following the rise of Fidel Castro in Cuba, created an event where approximately 124,000 undocumented immigrants came to America. The act was signed by the president Jimmy Carter.
  • Board of Education v. Pico

    Board of Education v. Pico
    The Board of Education for the Island Trees Union Free School District No. 26 ordered that certain books be removed from the junior, and senior high libraries. The decision was challenged, but eventually held up in court.

    Race cannot be a factor in assigning students to schools
    In a ruling between Parents involved in Community School v. Seattle School District No. 1, the Supreme Court ruled that race could not be a deciding factor on what school was attended. The Seattle school district allowed students to petition for which high school they would attend. Under tie circumstances, one of the deciding circumstances was race.

    Alabama enacted several tough new immigration laws. One of them being that students enrolling in school would require the knowledge of their immigration status. Opponents of the law worry that this could prevent the students from receiving an education. The law says that no student will be denied education without proof of a birth certificate.

    For the first time in the history of the United States of America, non-white Hispanics are the minority in public school registration across the country. This was created due to a larger increase in the Latino population, and incoming Asian population. AS schools become more diverse, the education style will need to become more diverse. The future of the country depends on it.

    Betsy DeVos selected as Secretary of Education
    President elect Donald Trump selected Republican donor, and billionaire Betsy DeVos to lead the office of Secretary of Education in his new cabinet. DeVos is an advocate for charter schools. Charter schools can often times create an environment where only the entitled get an education. The less fortunate are left in schools that have "lesser" education.
