    TJ Jefferson believed in at least 3 years of school for kids. He thought all should go to school so they could learn literacy. School was to "rake geniuses from the rubbish". The ones picked would go to university for free. At the time his ideas were considered radical. I am glad that he had these ideas because he planted the seed for public education. MORE IMPORTANT
  • Webster's Blue Back Speller

    Webster's Blue Back Speller
    Noah Webster published the Blue Back Speller in 1783. This book taught students about the US and its inhabitants. It promoted a new national language different from British English. It was to be pronounced and spelled differently. It sold millions of copies and is still in print.

    Horace Mann made a huge impact on schooling in America. He went on horseback from district to district reviewing over 1000 schools. He found that school qualities varied greatly. He reported on the physical condition of the schools. He found that places took better care of their livestock than their kids at school.     Common Schools
    Horace Mann standardized classrooms by creating common schools funded by the state. He thought everyone should have the same schooling so that it has a leveling effect and people rise up because of merit not money. He made it so that classrooms were higher quality. He is considered the patron saint of public education. This effects me because I am going to work in public education. MORE IMPORTANT
  • Sarah Roberts

    Sarah Roberts father tried to enroll her in a public school that was for whites only. They were not allowed in because of their skin color. Because of this Sarah's father sued. Roberts V City of Boston wanted to end discrimination in Boston publc schools. It was pretty much thrown out and Boston won.
  • Committee of Ten

    Committee of Ten
    The committee of ten was a group of educators. All over the nation there were conflicting ideas on how to teach. They believed that the high school curriculum should be standardized. It was in these committees that they reccomended 8 years of elementary school and 4 years of high school.
  • John Dewey

    John Dewey
    John Dewey believed in a child centered approach to education. He thought that students should be allowed to explore their own environments. He believed in a curriculum that married many topics. He believed that theacher should be someone who helps students with problem solving.
  • The Gary Plan

    The Gary Plan was influenced by the business movement. It is also known as the “work-study-play” plan or the “platoon system.” It taught school subjects related to occupations and everyday life. It was influenced by John Dewey's teachings.
  • Secondary School Movement

    This event talks about when high schools started becoming a popular thing in the US. Students at the high schools were getting educated on life skills. Students were prepared for occupations. The US was much better at getting secondary school attendance than in Europe.
  • Brown V. Board of Educaiton

    Brown V. Board of education was important for the US This was when schools were desegregated. They decided that seperate but equal was unconstitutional. They said that it went against the 14th ammendment. Our schools are desegregated today because of Brown V Board of education. It had great impacts. it also had negative consequences.   • Sputnik is Launched

    On October 4, 1957 Russia launched the first satellite into space. This really worried many americans as they thought that they were more technologically advanced than Russia. It was in the wake of Sputnik that NDEA was launched. The National Defencse Education act granted money to higher education.
  • The War on Poverty

    One of the main programs in the war on poverty was the elementary and secondary education act being signed into law. This act created the Title I program. This program gave money to schools. The schools that got money had a high population of impovershed students.
  • A Nation at Risk Report

    The National Commission on Excellence in Education that was formed by the Secretary of Education Terrel H. Bell released the report A Nation at Risk. A Nation at Risk talked about how the education system was in "urgent need of improvement". The report said that if we don't improve our future as a nation will be threatened. It said that both elementary and secondary schools needed more "rigorous and measurable" standards.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

    IDEA was signed into law in 1990. This says that students with disabilities are offered free and appropriate public education. The main goal of IDEA is to give students with disabilities the same access to education as everyone else. This makes sure that students are in their least restrictive environment and that they have an IEP. This is important now because this is still a law. We will have students in our classes with IEP's.   • No Child Left Behind

    NCLB is a reauthorization of ESEA. NCLB included title 1 schools. It makes sure that all teachers are highly educated. It says that all students must be at a proficient level.
