    The Pilgrims settled in America for the first time in 1620. This is the starting point of America and it's education. During this time, family and churches were primarily responsible for educating young children.

    Ye Olde Deluder Satan
    In 1647, a law passed that required towns of a certain population to hire a teacher to instruct all the children to read and write. This was the first step to a structured school setting. Without this law, we may have never had to go to school as children and we would still be relying on our families to educate us.
  • John Dewey

    John Dewey
    John Dewey was associated with the Progressive Movement which promoted that children learned best from real life experience. John Dewey believed in a "happy-medium" of a child-centered and subject-centered school curriculum. This planted the foundation of todays public schools curriculum to be both subject and child centered.

    In 1918, the Cardinal Principles report was made. This influenced the modern high schools curriculum by requiring a common core knowledge in the early high school years, then a more personalized curriculum based on what you career plans are in the later years of high school. These principles are the roots of what today's high school curriculum is.

    Brown vs. Board of Education
    This court case ruled that schools could no longer be segregated between races. Although it wasn't the easiest at the time, this allowed students of all colors, races, and ethnicities to have an equal advantage at school. Because of this law, there is no longer a disadvantage of getting an education because of your race. It has also helped to decrease some racism in today's schools.
