    Education in the Colonial Period
    Upper class learned reading, writing, math, poems and prayer. They had to memorize most of it since textbooks and other supplies were in short supply. Common books were the BIble, Primer and Hornbooks. Only for White students and they were privatly taught. Boys were more advanced in education to become plantation owners and girls learned duties of mistress of a plantaion.

    First Education Laws: Massachusetts Ordered the selectmen of each town to ascertain whether parents and masters (of apprentices) were in fact providing for the education for their children.
    It still I think applies today because now days, children have to go to school, and if they don't not only do they get punished but he parents do too.

  • Influence of Noah Webster

    Influence of Noah Webster
    Noah Webster was a teacher. He was a great influence in the new Republic. He sought for cultural independence. He believed the the purpose of education should be the inculcation fo patriotism. He created a distinct national language and curriculm. He wrote many texts of spelling, reading and grammer books, to replace the English versions that were being used. He wrote an American version of the Bible, and other books like the "Elementary Spelling Book" and the famous "American Dictionary."

    Brought over from England by Quaker Joseph Lancaster. His schools had one paid teacher who instructed a 100 students, who were taught by other students/ mentors. They were chosen for ther academic ability, and taught the basics of reading, writing, and aritmethic. The first established Monitorial school was in NYC in 1806.

    Secondayr School MovementThe Secondary School movement offered education beyond elementary school. The first school was established in 1821, known as the English Classical School. It was renamed in 1824 to the Boston English High School. The school was only open to boys as an alternate school.
    We needed this movement so we can contiue our education, its yet, another foundation of education.

    Horace Mann Horace Mann is known as the "Father of American Education." He was the spokes person for the common school movement. He campaigned in Massachusetts to get into the states system, and established a State Board of Education. If it weren't for him we would't have a State Board of Education. Also, we could still be in a bit of a predicament with how the education system works.

    A lot happened in the Progressive Reform Movement Era. Such things like, Wometn wer taught econmics, the man would come home after work and not go to he aaloon, People learned by doing, to exercise mind and body, and field-trips for children to explore the world of work and nature.

    The Chair was Charles Eliot: The President of Harvard University and other representatives of higher education. The committee was put together to put and effort toward standardizing the curriculm. They established the Nathional Educaiton Association (NEA), Recommended early education fo the basics and uniform subject matter to college-bound and termal students.

    John Dewey Known as the Father of the Progressive Education. He belived schools to be anchored in the WHOLE STUDENT. Meaning being there and helping the student to become a well rounded person in aspects like, physical, emotional, social, intellectual.
    I think he was right. It applies today becasue teaching is all about teaching the Whole Student. Helping them in every aspect of life we can, to help them become good citizens.

    The impact of the World War 2, was great. When it came to education enrollment declined significantly because teachers and students left school to go to the battlefield. Due to that effect funding was reduced as well.

    DEA is Individuals with Disablities Education Act. It provides students with disabilities to have a free appropriate public educaiton, to have an Individual Education Plan (IEP). to have an least restrictive environment, to have testing assessments and parent envolvment.
    I'm grateful to have it, so that when I'm teaching I can have a plan to back me up and works for me, the parent and student.
