A reaction to the emancipation causes the black codes which forbids any African Americans from owning any firearms. -

The National Firearms Act of 1934
The National Firearms Act of 1934, limiting the possession, sale and manufacturing of fully automatic firearms like sub-machine guns is approved by Congress. -
Federal Firearms Act of 1938
To own a gun you had to have a federal firearms license. -
Gun Control Act of 1968
This act was a thing for the purpose of “keeping firearms out of the hands of those not legally entitled to possess them because of age, criminal background, or incompetence.” -
Armed Career Criminal Act
Followed under the gun control act and enforced stricter laws on who and who could not own any kind of firearm, even bullets -
Brady bill
The blocking of 69,000 handguns sales in 1977, background checks were required. -
NRA

Columbine shooting
A school near Denver, Colorado named Columbine high school had two students come in killing 12 people along with themselves and leaving 24 wounded. This renewed debate on the need for more restricting gun control laws. -
National Instant Criminal Background Check Improvement Act
This required a full background check on criminal records, mental illnesses, family records and any other records to determine if you could or could not buy a firearm.
