    Meeting of the Estates General
    The Estates-General of 1789 was the first meeting since 1614 of the French Estates-General; they met at Versailles 5 May, 1789. The Estate included the First Estate, Second Estate, and Third Estate. They were immediately divided over fundamental issues. On June 17 the bitter struggle over this legal issue finally drove the deputies of the Third Estate to declare themselves the National Assembly.

    On 20 June 1789, royal officials locked the deputies out of their regular meeting hall, who had begun to call themselves the National Assembly, they occupied King Louis XVI's indoor tennis court and swore an oath not to split up until they had given France a new constitution. The king gave in and urged the nobles and the remaining clergy to join the assembly.

Proclaiming liberty, equality, and the right to resist oppression. The king has refused such innovations and the Parisians rose again.

    The March on Versailles. On October 5 a large mob marched to Versailles. The next day they brought the royal family back to Paris. The National Constituent Assembly followed the court, and in Paris it continued to work on the new constitution. This act intensified the French Revolution.

    The Reign of Terror occured (5 September 1793 – 28 July 1794). A period of violence that occurred after the onset of the French Revolution. The National Convention was divided between the Girondins, who wanted to organize a bourgeois republic in France, and the Montagnards, who, with Robespierre, wanted to give the lower classes a greater share in political and economic power. During this time King Louis XVI and 9 months later Marie Antionette were beheaded by the guillotine.

    Napoleon showed the first signs of illness at the end of 1817; he seems to have had an ulcer or a cancer of the stomach. Napoleon's empire collapsed because of the Continental System, the Peninsular War, and the invasion of Russia. These events are widely viewed as three major mistakes that led to the weakening of his rule in Europe. In all he ended up dying due to a sickness.
