    Taxes to Nobility
    Meeting of Louis XVI and the Estates-General to have the new law of charging taxes to the nobility approved on may 5th 1780 at versailles (Louise’s palace).
  • National Assembly

    On this date, the delegate of the Tirth Estate voted to establish the National assembly, this ended the absolute monarchy and the representative government began. This was the first sign of revolution.
  • Equality between First Second and Third Estates

    Equality between First Second and Third Estates
    Nobleman spoke up declaring their love of liberty and equality. They wanted to sweep away the feudal privileges of the First and Second Estates. They wanted to be equal to the nobles and clergy. They were successful.
  • Declaration of the Rights of Man

    The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. This document stated that “men are born and remain free and equal in rights”. They wanted liberty, property security and resistance to oppression. This document also guaranteed citizens equal justice freedom of speech and freedom of religion.
  • King and Queen leave Versailles

    King and Queen leave Versailles
    Women violently protested, they wanted bread to stop rising in price, they wanted the National assembly to provide the bread. Then they broke into King Louis palace and demanded them to leave paris. After some time the king and the queen left Versailles.
  • Completed Constitution

    The National Assembly completed the constitution which King Louis approved, this created a constitutional monarchy, it took most of the king's authority and created the Legislative Assembly. They had the power to create laws and approve or reject declaration of war.

    Because monarchs around Europe were worried about their own countries they urged the French to make Louis an absolute monarch again, The Legislative Assembly responded by declaring war.
  • Monarchy under attack

    Monarchy under attack
    About 20,000 men and women invaded the palace where the royal family was staying. They killed many royal guards and imprisoned Louis, Marie Antoinette and their children.
  • The guillotine

    The guillotine
    King Louis was declared guilty of treason and the Convention sentenced him to death. On January the 21st Louis was beheaded by a machine called the guillotine.
  • Reign of Terror

    Reign of Terror
    Robespierre became leader of the Committee of Public Safety. His period of governing became known as the Reign of Terror. As many as 40,000 were killed during the reign of Terror.
