French Revolution

  • The Monarchy: Louis XVI is crowned

    Louis XVI ascended to the throne at only the age of 19. He was too young to be in power and later on made decisions that would put France and its people in terrible position leading to the French Revolution.
  • Enlightenment: The Declaration of Independence

    The declaration of independence inspired the French to make declaration's of their own. The American's success influenced France to try for the same.
  • Enlightenment: The American Revolution

    The American revolution sparked hope into the French's eyes and showed them they could form a revolution also. Since the American's achieved and won the revolution the French believed they could too.
  • Formation of the National Assembly

    Assembly created by members of the third estate who were angered due to their unfair treatment and rights. This assembly succeeded in their doings and created the first constitution.
  • Bastille is stormed

    In rage, mobs raid Bastille to retrieve guns for war. They kill the guard and parade his head around on a stick. The people then continued to tear the place down brick by brick.
  • Declaration of the rights of man and of the citizen

    This declaration marked a great change for the people of the third estate. This document gave them the freedoms they had been working for.
  • Women's march on Versailles

    Women from the working class were fed up with the treatment and inability to buy bread so they marched to the palace in hopes of finding the queen and killing her. The queen escaped before any damage could be done to her, but the women managed to destroy her room in a symbol of rage.
  • The Monarchy: tennis court oath

    After the exiling from court, the third estate bands together in a nearby tennis court. There, they make an oath that they will not stop until they get what they want: equal freedoms and change in rights.
  • Formation of the Committee of Public Safety

    The committee was created to regulate and control the people in the community. The name of the group is ironic because they are the ones who ordered dozens of people to be executed which is the opposite of safe.
  • Execution of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette

    The two rulers finally had to meet their fate. They were publicly executed and paraded around town. The people rejoiced when their heads were cut off.
  • Execution of Robespierre

    Robespierre's life came crashing when he was executed. His death is ironic because he was the one who was the leader and brought his people into the great terror, and in the end he was turned on and executed.
  • North Italy and Europe

    Napoleon gained his fame by taking control of Northern Italy. He then tries for Egypt but fails.
  • Return to the Monarchy

    Napoleon takes control in a Coup D'etat and then proceeds to crown himself emperor in an absolute monarchy.
  • Napoleonic Code

    Napoleon introduces the Napoleonic code which took away feudal practices and women's equality. This code replaced the old and is still used today.
  • Expansion of France

    Napoleon's main goal was to conquer as much land as possible. He ended up gaining most of Europe and his family helped control all of it.
  • Exile #1

    Napoleon failed at gaining control over Russia and defeated he returned to France. He was exiled to Elba as a result
  • Exile #2

    Napoleon is given another chance and he again is defeated in the battle of Waterloo. He is finally exiled to St. Helena where he later dies.
