French Revolution

  • The Unrest

French were considered "advanced" in other countries, but sadly this wasn't their experience at all. There was an unrest because of bad harvest, high prices and taxes, etc. People were also being divided into three "estates"
  • Period: to

    Government Failures

France's government slowly went into a debt because of how much money the monarchs, King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were spending.
  • Economic Unrest

At this period of time, French economy was starting to go down and eventually ended up declining. Merchants, Factory workers, bankers and people from the third estate were becoming really frustrated.
  • Monarchy Issues

Because the bank had already loaned so much money to the monarchs, and because they initially had a lot of money to begin with, they rebelled and said they would no longer give them money which caused a big problem within monarchs.
  • Tennis Court Oath

Delegates of the Third Estate asked for votes to establish an ending for absolute monarchy and a start on representative democracy. This was an act upon revolution. Because of this, three days later they got locked out of their conference room by the government. They broke a door to an indoor tennis court saying that they would stay until someone wrote a new constitution.
  • Bastille Break-In

Another act of revolution on July 18 that same year where they went to a prison looking for gunpowder and invaded the prison as an angry mob. Several guards died that day. The same day the men who entered Bastille walked around their cities with the dead men's heads.
  • Too Expensive!

On October 1789, women complained on bread's price. They demanded that the National assembly must take action. These women carried dangerous weapons like knives, axes, etc. To threaten the people. Later on they complained to the monarchs, and broke into the palace.
  • Love of Liberty Equality

A couple noble men decided to speak up on love of liberty and equality. They also joined the members of the National Assembly to take away the privileges of the first and second estates. Because of this, the next day Old Regime was non-existent.
  • New and Improved Constitution.

In the beginning of 1791, the delegates of the National Assembly had already made some changes to the way of governing. By September 1791, the National Assembly officially finished and completed the new Constitution. This, King Louis XVI reluctantly approved. Even though they couldn't get the representative democracy they wanted, they got a constitutional monarchy, which gave some people power, not just the King.
  • Governmental Changes

Most of the people who were involved in changes that had to do with the government later started a club called the the Jacobins. Because of these people they got King Louis not only rid of his role in monarchy, but they also got him imprisoned.
