    Psychology: A New Academic Discipline
    Psychology, which is the study of mental processes and human behavior, started to change the education system from the traditional philosophy towards a more student centered system. This in turn, created a more interactive classroom which helps many students learn better.
  • WWI and Standardized Tests

    WWI and Standardized Tests
    The military needed a test so that they could determine the intellectual level of recruits. This is one of the first types of standardized tests, and despite the limitations of them they are still used in classrooms today. These tests put a lot of stress on students and force teachers to teach to the test instead of the students' needs creating a stressful environment.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    In a unanimous decision of the U.S. Supreme Court it was ruled that schools could no longer be segregated based off of just race. This didn't stop the segregation, but it was one of the first steps towards and equal education for everyone no matter their race.
  • Virtual Education

    Virtual Education
    With the creation of computers and the internet it allowed for the introduction of virtual education. Virtual education is where a student either full, or part time, conducts class activities through the internet instead of in the actual classroom. This allows for students to go to school through medical difficulties, it allows them to take classes that their school doesn't offer, and also helps those who are struggling because they can go at their own pace.
  • IDEA: Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

    IDEA: Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
    In 1975 more than half of the 8 million children with disabilities were not receiving a good enough education for them to have equal opportunity. It was IDEA that stated that these children had just as much right to go to public schools as other students. It also stated that they would receive special education services and individualized education programs within the public schools that they attend.
