Ernst Nagel

  • Birth

    Ernst was born in Austria-Hungary on November 16, 1901. He later moved to the United States in 1911 and became a U.S. citizen in 1919 (The)
  • Education

    After coming to the United States at the age of 10, Ernst attended the City College of New York where he earned his Bachelors of Science. He then went on to Columbia University and earned his doctorate in 1930 and stayed at the university and began teaching in 1931 (Eval). Nagel lived in New York City for the rest of his life and was very well accomplished.
  • Introduction to Logic

    In 1934 Ernst published his first book with the help of a teacher from the City College of New York, Morris Cohen. The book was titled Introduction to Logic and the Scientific Method and went on to one of the most successful and the first textbook about the scientific method. The textbook focused on the steps of scientific method, experimentation and empirical science (Eval).

  • The Structure of Science

    One of the best known works from Nagel was the book The Structure of Science: Problems in the Logic of Scientific Explanation. After learning more about logical realism from his teacher, Ernst believed that "holding that the principles of logic represent the universal and eternal traits of nature(Eval).” He later began reading works from European logical positivists and applied that to naturalism of the American pragmatists.
  • Later Years

    After becoming a professor at Columbia University in 1955 he went on to become one of the most distinguished academic rank in 1967 as a University Professor. Later in 1970 became a Professor Emeritus and stayed with the university til 1973. He lived the rest of his life in New York city and died of pneumonia (Eval).
