  • Suez Canal

    In 1858, the Suez Canal was built connecting the Nile River to both the Mediterranean and Red Seas. It was essential for trade routes and passageways; thus, because of it, emerging various conflicts as to who would possess such a rich and favorable route.
  • British troops take control of Egypt

    The British succeeded in defeating the Egyptian army at Tel El Kebir in September and took control of the country. The purpose of the invasion was to restore political stability to Egypt under a government of international controls, such as Britain.
  • Muslim League

    The Muslim League was formed to safeguard Muslim interests under Muhammad Ali Jinnah who led the demand for the partition of India, eventually resulting in the creation of Pakistan.
  • World War I

    Egypt becomes a British protectorate, thus exempting even more British control over Egypt.
  • Egyptian "Independence"

    Faud I becomes King of Egypt through succession after his father, the previous King passes away.
    In the same year the British recognized their colony, Egypt, as an independent one.
  • Muslim Brotherhood

    The Muslim Brotherhood was founded by Hassan al-Banna.
    It initially resembled an ordinary Islamic welfare society. It was capable of renewing broken links between tradition and modernity, enabling to gain a degree of popularity and influence that no welfare society enjoyed.
  • Great Depression

    Like every other country that was somewhat involved in the World Wars, eventually became affected by the Great Depression that occured in the 1930s. Egypt was also hit, causing it to suffer economically.
  • Monarchy - Political

    King Farouk succeeds his father as King of Egypt. He was the tenth ruler from the Muhammad Ali Dynasty and the penultimate King of Egypt and the Sudan, succeeding his father, Fuad I of Egypt, in 1936.
  • Anglo Egyptian Treaty

    Anglo-Egyptian Treaty was signed at Montreux, Switz. In May of 1937 it officially brought to an end 54 years of British occupation in Egypt. Nevertheless, Egyptian sovereignty remained circumscribed by the terms of the treaty, which established a 20-year military alliance that allowed Great Britain to impose martial law and censorship in Egypt in the event of international emergency.
  • Indian Independence Act

    The partition of India was set forth in the Indian Independence Act 1947 and resulted in the dissolution of the British Indian Empire and the end of the British Raj. It resulted in a struggle between the newly constituted states of India and Pakistan. Muslims versus Hindus.
