The Soviet Union sent Sputnik to space and that caused many nations worldwide to enter a space age. Citizens of countries around the world became afraid because they thought that the sendoff of Sputnik meant a nuclear world war would take place. The United States started working on a satellite before NASA was created. They were finally successful when they sent Explorer 1 to space on January 31, 1958. The satellite was launched into space with a rocket, as part of the rocket, it was the middle of the rocket. The satellite was cylindrical in shape. The shape and motion of the satellite made it hard for NASA to get information from the satellite. Explorer 1 was the first satellite to discover radiation in the Earth's magnetosphere.

NASA was officially created as a Federal agency on July 29, 1958. When Sputnik was sent to space it sparked a lot of questions with both citizens and political figures. The United States already planned on sending a satellite to space but when Sputnik us in space first they had to expedite the process. The president had to figure out how to beat other nations and get ahead in space exploration. The president needed to decide whether or not they needed a new program or to use an existing one.

According to Brian Edwards at The Week the congress stated that NASA will "provide for research into the problems of flight within and outside the Earth's atmosphere, and for other purposes." The article also states that the creation of NASA was mostly for the publicity. The public was scared because they had always thought that the U.S was ahead of other countries and then the Soviet Union launches Sputnik into space. Eisenhower had to do something because of the second Red Scare taking place.

The mission for the first human in space flight was called Project Mercury. The first man to be in space form the U.S was Alan Shepard Jr. It took 15 minutes to reach space. This was only the start of manned space crafts heading to space. Many other flights took place in the few years after. When the Project Mercury astronauts were coming back to Earth they plummeted into the ocean in capsules with no wings. Weeks after, John F. Kennedy announced his goal to get a man on the moon.
