  • 1946 Governor's Race

    1946 Governor's Race
    Upon governor elect Eugene Takmages death on December 21,1946 his supporters proposed a plan that allowed the Georgia legislature to elect a governor in January 1947.Talmages son ,Herman Talmage, was their number one choice they favored sinced he shared the same ideals as his father.The newly elected lieutenant governor, Melvin Thompson, claimed the office of governor, and the outgoing governor, Ellis Arnall, refused to leave office.Supreme court ruled Herman as the rightful governor.
  • Brown Vs. Board of Education

    Brown Vs. Board of Education
    On May 17, 1954, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren delivered the ruling that segregation of public schools was a violation of the 14th amendment and was thus unconstitutional. NAACP led the victory of this case.
  • 1956 State Flag

    1956 State Flag
    To show rebellion against the Brown Vs Board of Education ruling Georgia changed its state flag to ressemble the rebel Confederate battle flag.This flag was seen as extremely offensive because hate groups such as the KKK have adoted this flag.
  • Sibley Commission

    Sibley Commission
    Governor Ernest Vandiver Jr chose John Sibley to head the commission to have ten hearings held across the state during March 1960, Sibley allowed witnesses to state their choice of two options to either desegregate or segregate schools.In January 31 a bill was passed which officially desegregated Atlanta public schools the following autumn.

    The Albany Movement was a desegregation coalition formed in Albany, Georgia by local civil rights activists such as Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).MLK was present but was still proved a faluire into helping desegregate the local area.

    Was one of the biggest political rallies that demanded economic and civil rights for all African Americans and people of all races.Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech was adressed here in Washington D.C by Lincoln Memorial.

    Forbade discrimination on the bases of sex and race in hiring,promoting,and firing.The bill was preposed by John F. Kennedy but after his assassination his succesor Lyndon B. Johnson put the bill into play.Due to March on Washington U.S Congress passed this bill in 1964.

    Prohibited states from imposing any voting qualification on voting or deny the right of any citizen of the United States to vote on account of race or color.Due to the part of March on Washington This act was passed by the U.S congess on 1965 and signed into law by Lyndon B. Johnson.
  • 1996 Olympic Games

    1996 Olympic Games
    Andrew Young,Georgias Mayor,was successful in his campaign for Atlanta to host the Olympic Games in 1996.The Olympics helped Georgia gain visitors which ultimatley led to ecomonic growth in the area. In the process Atlanta changed dramatically, as new sports venues were built, park space was created, sidewalks and streets were improved, and housing patterns were altered. During the seventeen days of the Olympics, more than 2 million visitors came to Atlanta which lasted from July 19 to August 4.
