  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Plessy v. Ferguson
    This landmark court case sanctioned "separate but equal" segregation. This allowed for African Americans to be separated from whites but still be treated equally. This was important because it was the first big step towards racial equality at the time and allowed for further growth in racial relations
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    Another Landmark case for Civil rights that ruled against segregation in public schools. This court case overturned the Plessy v. Ferguson ruling. This was an important case because it paved way for the complete desegregation of African Americans
  • Murder of Emmett Till

    Murder of Emmett Till
    Emmett Till was murdered by Roy Bryant for "wolf calling" his wife. He was acquitted by an all white jury fro the murder. This set an example of the mistreatment of blacks at the time.
  • Rosa Parks & the Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Rosa Parks & the Montgomery Bus Boycott
    Rosa Parks sat in the white section of the bus and was confronted by passengers and the bus driver. Rosa parks refused to move and was arrested. This is important because it started the bus boycott that showed people the power that African Americans had.
  • Founding of Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) & Martin Luther King

    Founding of Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) & Martin Luther King
    Martin Luther King founded the SCLC and led people in peaceful protest. MLK used this organization to catapult the civil rights movement. This is important because MLK was one of the key players in the civil rights movements.
  • Little Rock Nine & Central High School

    Little Rock Nine & Central High School
    These 9 students were enrolled into an all white high school. They were met with violent attacks and the national guard had to be called. This showed progress in desegregation but not in tolerance of race.
  • Greensboro Sit- In

    Greensboro Sit- In
    Students sat at the white section of a Diner and waited to be served food. They were attacked and mistreated for not moving. This is important because it showed racist whites in a bad light and progressed the civil rights movement.
  • Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) & Freedom Summer

    Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) & Freedom Summer
    This movement was mostly student based led by Ella Baker. This movement was created to register as many black voters as they could. This was significant because it altered the number of black voters and brought power to the black community.
  • Freedom Ride/Freedom Riders

    Freedom Ride/Freedom Riders
    The freedom rides were a campaign where Congress of racial equality rode buses protesting. These people were attacked and had their buses burned. This was important because the government directly supported black rights.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    Civil rights leaders created a march in Washington DC. This march involved the " I have a dream" speech. This was important because thousands of people came together and showed the massive support for the movement.
  • Civil Rights Act

    Civil Rights Act
    The civil rights act ended the discrimination of blacks in gov. This allowed for blacks to finally have freedom. This was significant because it was the biggest breakthrough in Civil Rights movement.
  • Voting Rights Act

    Voting Rights Act
    This act allowed blacks to vote. African Americans could finally be represented in government. This is significant because it was one of the great accomplishments for Civil Rights
  • Assassination of Malcolm X

    Assassination of Malcolm X
    Malcolm X was shot and killed by Thomas Hagen. Malcolm X was one of the more radical leaders that believed in self defense against white aggression. This was significant because it showed that people were not happy with the Civil rights movements and their success.
  • Assassination of MLK

    Assassination of MLK
    MLK was assassinated by James Earl Ray who was against the Civil Rights Movement. The death of MLK rocked the Civil Rights movement and spurred anger in the black community. This was significant because it left the legacy of one of the most famous Civil Rights Leader.
