  • The Montgomery Bus Boycott

    The Montgomery Bus Boycott
    Some important activits were Dr. Martin King Jr and Rosa Parks. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference was established because of this event. When Rosa Parks was arrested for not not complying with segregation laws, the African American community in Montgomery was outraged and wanted to lead a boycott with King as their leader. It was agreed that no African American person should use public transportantion but instead use other ways. After a year battle in the courts and streets. Peace won
  • The Little Rock NIne

    The Little Rock NIne
    As a result of the Brown vs Board of Education case, a highschool in LIttle Rock Arkansas was bound by law to intergrate its students. The firs nine AA to go was escorted to school daily. One of the most successful of the Little Rock Nine was Ernest Green who worked for President Jimmy Carter as the Assistant Secretary of Labor.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1957

    Civil Rights Act of 1957
    This was an act passed by the senate to protect the voting rights of AA. It was made by Eisenhower and it was not passed as strong as previously suggested because of a compromise with Southern Democrats. The SCLC announced a campaign to register 2 million new AA voters after the acts approval,The last Civil Rights act previously past was in 1866 refering to the Black Codes.

    The Sit in Movement
    Four friends sat in a resutrant until they were to be given services like other people. As the news spread, many students joined in and even many people around the States were tyring out this new form of boycotting. The colection of these students created the Student Non-violent coordinating Committee. These sit in had changed the moods of AA in america, when they contributed to non-violence.
  • The Freedom Riders

    The Freedom Riders
    Dispite the ruling of the court, some of the south still segregated the buses. Protestors, Freedom Riders, took buses down there to help the situation. The riders were attacked and the buses damaged. This had given a wake up call to America, specifically Kennedy. The Public Safety Commissioner had actually called the KKK to attack the protestors.

    James Meredith and the Desegregation of the University of Mississippi
    When a yound colored man was applying for school, he was denied to do so by the governor of Mississippi. The president sent reenforcements to help but a full our riot broke out. Meredith had to take classes for the rest of the year under protection of the Marshals
  • Protests in Birmingham

    Protests in Birmingham
    King had seen that the violence had been getting attention, so he organized a peaceful demostration that would be not welcomed by some citizens. He went to jail and when he was released he returned to the demostration. The commisioner at the time had ordered a violent attack at the peaceful protestors. The same man who set the attacks against the freedom riders had also organized the attacks on the protestors.

    To find more public support to pass Civil Rights act in congress, proposed bu Kennedy, he railed a demostration in DC. More than 200,000 people had attended of all races and King delievered his famous speech. Time limits for speeches were four minutes -- and King's speech clocked in at 16 minutes

    The Southern Democrats in Congress was making it very hard to pass the bill. Johnson had taken extensive steps to make sure it would pass as legacy of Kennedy. The bill illegal in most places accomidations and it gave its citizens of all races and nationalities equal access to public facilities. It established the Equal Employment Oppertunity COmmission.Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. met for the first and only time during Senate debate on the act
  • The Selma March

    The Selma March
    The SCLC and KIng selected Selma as an important place to focus on.he sheriff there had deputized citizens so they could dicourage them from voting. SO he made arranged a demostarion/March from Selma to Montgomery. On their march, they were brutalized by more deputized citizens and it became known as "Bloody Sunday". This had convinced JOhnson to suggest new voting rights. There were about 600 people who had planned to participate in the first march.

    The house of Representatives passed the bill by a wide margin. This bill set up federal standards held by officers. It also banned discrimnatory devices, like literacy tests. So many AA had registered to be voters.The actions in Selma set this into motion to get passed.
  • Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

    Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
    A man by the name James Earl Ray had murdered King, by a shot of a sniper. This called for the end of the unified civil rights movement. MLK and the SCLC were planning on doing a demostration in Memphis, Ray had stopped him. In the scene of his death the motel owner had scooped King's blood into a jar.
