  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Plessy v. Ferguson
    A case in which the state of Louisana passed a law requiuring seperate railway cars for black and whitesin 1892 Homer Adolph bPlessy took a seat in a whites only, refusing to move when asked. Resulting in going intonthe supreme court and having them decide that constitution couldnot overcome racial attitudes and having "seperate but equal" was constitutional.This had an impact of the whites thinking it was okayto give the blacks dirty things becuase it was "equal".
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    This was a case in which the supreme courtJustice Earl set out the united ruling. Segregation of public schools was a viloation towards the 14th amendment soitwas considerd not constitutional and this was the case that helped this problem be resolved. This was important because if it was not for this the blacks would have not gotten a good education.
  • Murder of Emmit Till

    Murder of Emmit Till
    Emmett Till reportedly flirted with a white cashier. Four days following the event Till was kidnapped by two white men, beat then shot to the head. This made an impact because of Till began to realize how unfair the punishment was for the blacks.
  • Rosa Parks / Montogomery Boycott

    Rosa sat downm after a tired day of work, sitting in a whites seat and when asked to move she did not comply. Rosa was arrested and fined 10 dollers.Her arrest was sisgnificant bercuase it began to changer the ways the US saw segregation.
  • Founding of Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) & Martin Luther King

    This group was made up from the MIA and other protest groups, they issued a document declaring that the civil rights were a must to the democracy, there should be put a stop to segregation, and the blacks should reject it non violently. It had an executive board of directors and officers which included Martin Luther King.
  • Little Rock Nine & Central High School

    The african american group of students was known as Little Rock Nine. These students tried to enter Central HIgh but governer Orval Faubus called the national state guard to block the blacks from enetring however he wasnot succesful becuase a few dyas later president Eisenhower sent in federal troops to escort the Little Rock NIne into the school. Even though they now attended school and had a goood education they were treated miserably and only very few put up with it and graduated.
  • Greensboro sit-in

    Greensboro sit-in
    Achain of no-violent prtotests. Young African-American students sat at a white lunch counter to start a movement, and when asked to move and spit into their faces and beaten they did not harm back. Being important becuase it led to the woolworth department removinng the policy of racial segregation in southern US.
  • Freedom ride/ Freedom riders

    Freedom ride/ Freedom riders
    7 blacks and 6 whites left Washington DC on 2 public buses, to attempt asnd test the Boynton V Virginia case which declared segregation.They bombed these buses killing many and leaving some injured just to challenge the segregation.The importance of thismovemnt was that it caused major pressuere on the federal govenment to do something.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    A march with 250,000 people all to promote the civil rights and equality. Walking down independence avenues and the followed by "I have a dream speech". This march initiated by Philip Randolph was important because, it initiated more people to join the mpovement.
  • Assassination of Malcolm X

    After many attempts of assassination the nation of Islam sadly succeded one week after firebombing his home. He was shot while speaking at a rally of his organizations in NYC because it was believed that he had become to powerful in the nation of Islam.This assassination is a important event because it was proven to many that racism was very strong and whites thought it was okay to do this kind of stuff then be treated good by the restof the blacks.
  • Student nonviolating coordinating committee/ Freedom Summer

    Intoduces events of 1964 when over 700 students black and whitewent to Mississippi to help black citizens voteand combat forms of discrimination. Organized bby SNCC it was wished that the participation of middle class white students would bring in results and draw in the the attention of the nation. This was important because just like wished it did catch the attentioon of the nation.
  • Civil Rights Act (1964)

    Proposed by president JFK who was sympathetic to Afreican-Americans he understood blacks deserved full equalityand that racial discrementaion was an embarrassmnet to America. Therefore, the civil rights acts was passed. This event is significant becuase it authorized federal acdtion against segregation.
  • Voting rights act of 1965

    Law that was passed durionng the civil rights movement,elijminating various devices like the literacy test which was used to restrict the blacks from voting. Signed into law by Lyndon Johnson, protecting the 15th amendment. The signiface of this event was thge elimination of un fair treaty when blacks tried voting.
  • Assassination of MLK

    James Earl Rayshot MLK due to racism. His assassination was planned a few months ahead of time, killing MLK in memphis as he stood on the balcony of his hotel room shooting him to death. The assassination of MLK took a very significant role becuase it showed that the whitres truley did not want any change.
