    Guomindang (GMD) formed
    The GMD was Chiang's political group, and which formed the new nationalist government in Taiwan after the Communists took over the mainland. Influence: The whole establishment of the GMD was what initially started the Chinese Civil War. The war was fought between the GMD and the CCP for power in China.
  • May 4th Movement

    May 4th Movement
    Explanation: The significance of the May Fourth Movement was that it was dedicated to change and revolutionize China as sole, proud, and independent nation. Some scholars and students were inspired by revolutionary ideology in order to change China. The May 4th Movement was intended to change and revolutionize China for the better. Both the CCP and the GMD fought over who had better solutions to the problems.

    Chinese Communist Party (CCP)  formed
    The Chinese Communist Party was one of the two strongest revolutionary parties fighitng in the Chinese Civil War. The CCP was a groupof Marxist known as Li Dazhao and Chen Duxiu. The CCP forming was the other revolutionary party to fight for power in China

    The First United Front was the first attempt for the CCP and the GMD to unite under one power to take control and revolutionize China. They wanted to extinguish all religonism and warlords in China. This influenced the war because it was the first attempt to unite the two parties under one, and it failed.

    Jiang Jieshi became the leader of GMD in March. Tempers flare between Jiang and Communist Central Committee. Communist-led strikes in central China threatened Jiang. Shanghai massacre of communists occured when communists fought over power in China, over who's revolutionary ideology would better modernize China.

    Japanese Attack on Manchuria
    In 1931 Japan had claimed that the Chinese had blown up and destroyed a railway train full of Japanese supplies. Japan had claimed Manchuria with ease, and killed thousands of Chinese soldiers and citizens. This was an important phase in the Chinese Civil War, and when China gained the desire to expand their own empire and they became motivated to be able to stand up for themselves against stronger nations, such as Japan.

    Japan was a majority of China's problems during this time period. Japan was in demand for growth in empire and they believed that the easiest nation to take under their control was China. When the Soviet Union declared war on Japan, China was in the clear and did not have to further worry about Japan and their desire to take China. China is now able to focus on their country's growth and modernizing as a nation
  • Long March begins

    Long March begins
    Mao decided that the only change the CCP needed was to build another base, and in 1934 embarked on The Long March. The Long March took the CCP on a 9,600km trek to Shaanxi across some of the roughest conditions in China. It took 368 days and it led to the death of more than 90% communists.
  • Second United Front is formed

    Second United Front is formed
    The Second United Front was the second attempt for the GMD and the CCP to unite under one strong army. The needed to unite under one army for their war against Japan, and the only way they would have stood a chance ws to unite under one army. The CCP had also hoped that this would weaken the GMD and that after the war against Japan, they would have an advantage in the civil war.

    The rape of Nanjing was a horrible tragedy that took place in China. Men, women, and children were all slaughtered and raped by Japanese soldiers, and they had no means of defending themselves. This was an awful event that happened in the Chinese Civil War, and it was just one of the many things that motivated all Chinese parties to change China.

    The Anhui Incident was an incident that costed the lives of 10,000 marchers under the communist New Forth Party. The GMD was stronger at the time and killed the communist marchers in order to support their own ideas, and cut any other ideology in China. Was the the initial uprising of tension between the parties, and one of the short term cuases of the war.

    Japan formally surrenders in Chinese Theater
    Japan formally surrendered after they had been devestated by a majority of the allied powers. Their military, economy, and a majority of their resources had all been destroyed, Japan was forced to surrender and China had an opportunity to seize power, and to use Japan's downfall as a time to grow, and to expand their own empire.
  • Truce between CCP and GMD

    After Marshall left China, and the CCP and the GMD were fighting in Manchuria, there was a ceasefire. The GMD had much contol over central Manchuria. The CCP demanded a cease fire because they were loosing resistance, and the GMD had the upper hand.

    Fighting between the GMD and the CCP broke out in Manchuria, while Marshall was trying to design terms of agreement both parties could come to, in order to end the Chinese CIvil War. This was when the true fighting for power breaks out for the two powers, and the fight for ultimate control of China began.

    General Marshall was given the responsibility to convince both the CCP and the GMD to agree on the following terms: prepare to set up a coalition government, form a temporarystate council, unite their armies in a new National Army and have free elections for local government. When the negotiations started being finalized, both the GMD and CCP started moving troops into Manchuria, and Marshall left China, as the fate and the future of China was to be decided on the battlefield.

    Mao's announced new land reforms for the peasants. The land reforms led to the peasants joining the communists, as their victory would mean they could keep their land. Mao was able to reestablish the strength of the communist party with the support of the peasants, as he helped rebuild and approve their living conditions, and their support in the run for ultimate power in China.

    US Congress passes the China Aid Act
    The US established a China Aid Act that would help the strength of the GMD. The US was always a country that was anti-communist and would support any nation fighting against communism. The GMD gained supplies from the US to fortify themselves and gain an advantage against the communists. The GMD continued to grow stronger, and having the US's support was a useful aid.
  • Battle Huai -Hai

    The Battle of Huai-Hai was one of the greatest battles of the 20th century in China. The Communist party, the CCP had gained a lot of resources through the peasants, and it was the first battle that they featured the peasants as soldiers. It was the first ultimate defeat of the GMD, and the start of when the CCP started to gain an upper hand.
  • CCP Takes Nanjing and Shanghai

    CCP Takes Nanjing and Shanghai
    The CCP started gaining the support fom many of the citizens of China, including the peasants. They were able to establish a better army, and more military assistances, with their newly trained soldiers, the peasants. They were able to take two of China's most populated and powerful cities with ease, and their rise and declaration of power began under Mao Zedong.

    Mao announces the establishment of the People's Republic of China
    The war was brough to an end when the communist leader of the CCP, Mao Zedong, established the new government reform in China. The Peoples Republic of China. Mao called his new reform the people's dictatorship, where the citizens would be in control and they were divded into the 4 social classes: the workers, the peasants, the petite bourgeoisie, and the national-capitalists.
