    The point in Greek history from 1100-750 B.C.E. is called the Dark Age because the population decreased significantly and much less food was being produced. Not much is known about the Dark Age, but we do know that many Greeks left the mainland during this period, supposedly in search of a better life.

    The Iliad and the Odyssey
    Around 800 B.C.E., Homer wrote the Iliad and the Odyssey. These were the first epic poems of ancient Greece and were used by Greeks as historical references.

    The Battle of Marathon
    The Persians and Greeks fought in this great battle in 490 B.C.E. In this battle, the Greeks won, boosting their confidence in battling the Persians.

    Construction on the Acropolis Is Begun

    Construction on the Acropolis Is Begun
    In 448 B.C.E., the Greeks began a series of construction projects on the Acropolis. The projects include a gigantic entrance gate, a temple to Nike, the goddess of victory, and a multilevel temple honoring different gods and heroes called the Erechtheum.

    The Greek Parthenon

    From 447-432 B.C.E., the Greeks in Athens built the Parthenon. It was a building dedicated to Athena, the Greek goddess of war and wisdom. The Parthenon was built in parallelism to the laws of nature as seen by the architects and represents calmness, clarity, and freedom from detail.

    Plato

    Plato is considered to be one of the greatest Greek philosophers of all time. He was raised under Socrates' wing and went on to be a reputable successor after Socrates' death. He studied ideas of thoughts and reality, as well as what made a government successful.
  • Period: 356 BCE to 323 BCE

    Alexander the Great

    Alexander the Great was born in 356 B.C.E. He is considered one of the greatest military leaders of all of ancient history because he expanded Grecian reign by 2 million square miles. He finally died in 323 B.C.E.
  • 333 BCE

    The Battle of Issus

    Alexander the Great fought Darius and the Persians at Issus in 333 B.C.E. Although outnumbered, Alexander led his troops well and became victorious.
  • Period: 287 BCE to 212 BCE

    Archimedes

    Archimedes was a well-respected and highly-accomplished scientist during the Hellenistic era. He is known for his achievements in math and geometry and was also a successful inventor. He created pi, invented the water screw, and calculated water displacement.
  • 164 BCE

    Jewish Uprising

    Jewish Uprising
    In 164 B.C.E., a Jewish uprising led by Judas Maccabaeus led to the Jews taking back control of their Temple. This event in which the Jews seized control of their Temple again is celebrated each year by Jews as the holiday of Hannukah. Hannukah is Hebrew for rededication.
