  • The Start

    British win war against NA and French
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    First battle or Rev. War. The British were beaten badly and it showed that the Americans could fight.
  • Common Sense 1775

    Thomas Paine writes pamphlet called Common Sense. It says that the colonist owe the king nothing and that being ruled by Britain is only hurting them. It sells very well.
  • Starting to Tax

    British think that colonist in the 13 colonies should pay them because they are in debt from the war
  • Stamp Act

    British need money so they put tax on documents. Not big tax (only affects the rich) but colonist are mad because they don't have same rights as British colonist in England.
  • Townshend Acts

    Tax on glass, paper, lead
  • Writs of Assistance

    Legal documents let gov. search ships cargo without (smugglers) reason
  • Protest

    Colonist boycott Brit. goods, hurt/injure tax collectors, sign petitions, say/act out bad things about Brit. Gov., etc.
  • Leaders form

    John Adams, Samuel Adams, Patrick Henry, Mercy Otis Warren, Sons of Liberty, Daughters of Liberty
  • Boston Massacre

    Group of protesters gather outside customs homes. Brit soldiers panic and shoot 5 people
  • Tea Act

    (Many refuse to buy tea) British East India Company in debt so parliament skips merchants in Tea trade so the $ of tea is smaller (Try to get more people to buy tea)
  • Boston Tea Party

    Men dressed as N.A. dump 342 chest of tea dumped into Boston Harbor
  • Intolerable Acts (1774)

    Four laws: Boston Harbor is closed, Only 1 town meeting per year without gov. Permission, customs officers and officials have trial in Britain or Canada not Mass, new Quartering Act: Colonist have to house Brit. Soldiers
  • Quebec Act

    Set up a Gov. for Canada, gave religious freedom to French Catholics, extended border of Quebec (have land between Ohio and Missouri river) colonist mad
  • Supporting Boston, Working together

    Other colonies give supplies/goods. Work together (militia, Minutemen, Committee of correspondence, leaders, etc.)
  • Fight in Lexington and Concord

    British soldiers think Minutemen keep all supplies in Concord so attack there. Minutemen waiting there and for return and defeat Brit.
  • The Olive Branch

    Second Continental Congress meets and decides to send TOB. It says that they will be loyal to the king, but that they wanted the Intolerable Acts repealed.
