    Conflicts in the Middle East begin because of the creation of Israel. After Israel was created, many Middle Eastern countries refused to recognize that Israel existed. Wars and terrorist and guerrilla attacks were made against Israel and the Palestinian Arabs living under Israeli control further tensions.

    Six Day War
    War between Egypt and Israel broke out in the Sinai Peninsula and Gaza in Egypt because Egypt closed off the Gulf of Aqaba which was Israel's route to the Red Sea. Israel attacked Egypt, Syria, and Jordan and took control of the Golan Heights, Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, West Bank, and East Jerusalem.

    Egypt and Syria both launched a surprised attack against Israel to win back their territory. The attack took place on the Jewish holy day, Yom Kippur. After weeks of fighting, both sides agreed to a cease-fire.

    Egyptian president, Anwar Sadat decided that he wanted to make peace with Israel. U.S president, Jimmy Carter invited Sadat and Israeli prime minister, Menachem Begin to Camp David, a presidential retreat in Maryland, to help negotiate peace between both countries.
  • Camp David Accords Signed

    Camp David Accords Signed
    In 1979, Sadat and Begin signed the Camp David Accords in which Egypt recognized Israel and Israel returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt. The peace agreement ended thirty years of conflict between Egypt and Israel.
