Cells Through the Years

  • Robert Hooke

     Robert Hooke
Robert Hooke was a English Scientist and Microscopist. He was the first to notice the existance of the cell. Hooke wrote and piblished a book called Micrographia that consisted of his illistrations of compartments of cork that he saw in his microscope. He found a honeycomb- like structure in a cork sample under his microscope. He called them cells, using the root word cellula which means small compartments.
  • Antonie van Leeuwenhoek

     Antonie van Leeuwenhoek
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek is one of the first scientists to reconize a cell's existance. When sudying a sample of pond water Leeuwenhoek saw tiny compartments. He reconized them as organisms through a microscope. In additon he was also made advances in the microscope. For example he created over 400 microscopes, some of which we still possess. The most powerful could inhance the size of sample by 275.
  • Anton van Leeuwenhoek Part 2

    Anton van Leeuwenhoek Part 2
Anton van Leeuwenhoek made another very important advance. He discovered the single celled organisms we know as protazoa. He was also the first to see, understand and explain red blood cells and sperm cells in both humans and animals. In another subject Leeuwenhoek continued his studie on the lifecycles on insects and the structure of plants. To conclude, Leeuwenhoek made many important discoveries during his lifetime about cells and many other things.
  • Robert Brown

    Robert Brown
English Botanist Robert Brown discovered that plant cells have a nucleous.
  • Matthias Jakob Schleiden

    Matthias Jakob Schleiden
Matthias Jakob Schleiden reaserched and discovered that all plants are made up of cells. He theorized that the cell is the basic building block of all plant matter. This declaration was one of the first discoveries that concearned all cells. This later helped Braun in discovering that cells are the basic unit of life in organims.
  • Theodor Schwann

    Theodor Schwann
Theodor Schwann made a key discovery about cells. He concluded that all animal tissue is made up of cells. In other words, all animals consist cells. This put an end to any theories that supported that plants and animals had a different sturcture fundamentally. Therefore it is an important stepping stone in discovering more about the cell.
  • Albrecht von Kolliker

    Albrecht von Kolliker
Albrecht von Kolliker studied decided that sperm cells and egg cells were also cells. He also studied that cells can only be generated by the process of other existing cells and nothing else. In addition Kolliker supported the idea that if tissue was observed it could be refered to as a mass of cells.
  • Carl Heinrich Braun

    Carl Heinrich Braun
Braun's discovery is one of the three components to the cell theory. Carl Heinrich Braun realized that cells were the basoc unit of life. With the studies of Schleiden and Schwann he was able to conclude this key theory that is proven and used in many ways. Therefore Braun stated that cells were the basic until of life.
  • Rudolf Virchow

    Rudolf Virchow
Virchow topped of the cell theory in his life time. Rudolf Virchow proved that all cells come from existing cells. This concluded the cell theory. He aslo was the first to say that the cells theory applied to both living tissue and dead tissue. Therefore Virchow had a large part in what we study today.
  • August Weismann

    August Weismann
August Weismann made certain discoveries about sex cells. He stated that sex cells divide differently. This process is known as meiosis and is very speacial to this specific cell. Weismann studied the reproduction of jellyfish to conclude that because of the joining of substance from parents, the offspring vary. He titled this substance "germ plasm."
  • Janet Plowe

    Janet Plowe
Janet Plowe made discoveries about organelles. She decided that the cell membrane is a physical organelle or stucture. In closer examination later on she also reconized that it is the wall in between two liquids. Thos helped us to learn more about the inside of the cell which could help us understand and uncover more about its function.
  • Lynn Margulis

    Lynn Margulis
Lynn Marguils also made discoveries about organelles. She reconzied that with specific oranelles, miniture structures that are found within certain cells were free-living cells at some point. In other words past calls can live within other cells. This helped us to understand more about cell reproduction.
  • Carl Woese

    Carl Woese
Carl Woese finds that bacteria are not alone in being the only simple-celled prokaryotes. A great amount of the organims that are part of the Archaea kingdom live in harsh conditions. Archaea are harmless and are not known to cause diease or any other life threating things. They live in either extremly hot extremly cold climates. They inhabit areas that are high in salt, metals, chemicals and acids.
