Cell Theory Timeline

  • Zacharias Janssen

    Zacharias Janssen
Zacharias produced the first compound microscope by combining two convex lenses within a tube. This would eventually help each part of the modern cell theory because they can now look deeper into the composition of each of them.
  • Robert Hooke

    Robert Hooke
When Robert Hooke cut a cork into a thin slice and looked at it under his microscope in 1665, he saw what looked to be little boxes in the cork, which he called cells. This would help towards the 1st part of the modern cell theory because they are more able to look into the composition of the cell and identify things.
  • Anton Van Leewenhoek

    Anton Van Leewenhoek
Anton viewed pond water under a microscpe in 1673 and discovered small animals which he called animalcules and also discovered bacteria while scraping crud from his teeth. This would help to support the 3rd part of the modern cell theory that cells make up living organisms.
  • Matthias Schleiden

    Matthias Schleiden
German botanist who discovered that plants are made up of cells. This would help make up the 1st part of the modern cell theory.
  • Theodor Schwann

    Theodor Schwann
German physiologist and histologist that identified the cell as the basic structure of plant and animal tissue. This would help to create the 3rd part of the modern cell theory.
  • Rudolph Virchow

    Rudolph Virchow
A doctor who stated that all living cells come from other living cells which is part 3 of the cell theory.
  • TODAY

    TODAY
    Mondern Cell Theory-
    1. All known living things are made up of one or more cells.
    2. All living cells arise from pre-existing cells by division.
    3. The cell is the fundamental unit of structure and function in all living organisms.
