    Sinking of Lusitania
    The Lusitania was the fastest passenger boat at the time reaching about 25 knots. In 1913, the ship was docked in Liverpool before the war commenced, and it was fitted with ammunition and gun mounts under the teak deck. On May 1st, 1915, the ship started its voyage from New York City to Liverpool. On May 7th, the ship was struck by a torpedo from the Germans. A second explosion occurred underneath the deck. 1,119 people died out of 1,924 that were on the ship, 114 of which were American.

    Great Migration

    Many African Americans from the south decided to move north and some even west between 1915 and 1960. They wanted to escape poor living conditions and also racial tension that existed in the south. Many companies needed workers since many men went to war. The Pennsylvania Railroad was in dire need and paid travel expenses to 12,000 African Americans. Many African Americans were able to find stable jobs and escape oppression thus changing the entire nation.

    Selective Service Act
    Woodrow Wilson needed troops before he could join World War 1. He only had roughly 100,000 men, they were untrained, and were not equipped enough to fight. Wilson’s solution was to get the Selective Service Act passed so that men between the ages of 21 and 30 could be enlisted into the war so the United States had a fighting chance. He signed it into law on May 18th, 1917 and within a few months, the army was up to 10 million soldiers.

    Spirit of St. Louis Takes Off
    The Spirit of St. Louis is a plane that flew from New York to Paris in one flight and was the first to do so. It was a single engine aircraft. He had left on May 20th, 1927 and landed 33 and a half hours later in Paris to a crowd of 100,000.

    Stock Market Collapse
    The peak of the stock market crash in 1929 was in August. On October 18th, the fall began. This was due to the lowered production and increasing unemployment, leaving stocks at a fraction of what they were worth. Many people rushed to banks to get their money out of their accounts thus causing thousands to close. A little less than 13 million stock trades were made on October 24th. On October 29th, about 16.5 million trades were made. The stock prices had nowhere to go but up from that point.
