    Louis was convicted of conspiracy with foreign powers and punished to death by a majority. On January 21, he walked steadfastly to the guillotine and was executed. Nine months later, Marie Antoinette was convicted of treason by a tribunal, soon she followed her husband to the guillotine.

    Robespierre was elected to the Committee of Public Safety.During his leadership, the committee came to express virtual dictatorial control over the French government. Faced with the threat of civil war and foreign invasion. Revolutionary government inaugurated the Reign of Terror in September. In the orgy of bloodshed, Robespierre purged many of his political opponents.

    (September 5 1793- July 28 1794)
    After the death of Louis XVI in 1793, a Reign of Terror began. First victim was Marie Antoinette: imprisoned with her children after separated from Louis, set off a parade of prominent and not very good citizens to their deaths. The guillotine, a new way of execution was put to its job. Women were encouraged to sit and knit during trials and executions. The Revolutionary Tribunal execution of 2,400 people in Paris July 1794. Across France 30,000 people died.

    Marked the final overthrow of Napoleon Bonaparte, who defeated much of Europe in the early 19th century. Napoleon rose through the ranks of the French army during the French Revolution, took control of the French government in 1799 and became emperor in 1804.
