  • Palmer Raids

    Palmer Raids
    The Palmer Raids were raids done by the United States Department of Justice. They were done to capture raiders and deport them. The main people targeted during the Raids were immigrants, anarchists, and radicals. Alexander Palmer was the one to conduct the Raids.
  • 18th Amendment

    18th Amendment
    Prohibition is the ban on the making and selling of alcohol. This was known as the 18th amendment. Many bars closed because this amendment was made. Many people didn’t agree with this amendment and acquired alcohol anyway. People who sold alcohol illegally were called bootleggers. This amendment caused the crime levels to increase. Al Capone was a monster who became very known during the prohibition times.

    Flappers were women who didn’t follow the modest trend rules. They wanted to prove a point by doing what wasn’t common. They were women who had short hair, smoked cigarettes, drank alcohol and wore short dresses. Women wanted to be treated the same way men were treated so this is what they did to be noticed.

    The writers of this time such as Ernest Hemingway were known as the “Lost Genertaion”. The poets and writers in the 1920s varied greatly in their styles. Many of their writings were about people who had flaws but had heroic qualities. Some of the writers of this time moved to Europe.

    Many younger people and women gained more independence and respect. Technology is starting to develop at this time. Music like jazz and blues gain more popularity. Working people are permitted off time. Many Americans lived in cities rather than on farms

    In the 1920’s African Americans took big steps in helping themselves. Many African Americans migragated. Many of their lives changed for the better socially and politically. They were moving from the south to the north. They were able to get jobs and do many other things they weren’t able to before.

    President Harding died on August 2, 1923. After his death Coolidge became president. During Harding’s presidency there were many scandals. His administration consisted of his many friends from Ohio. The most famous scandal was known as the Teapot Dome Scandal.

    The Great Depression was caused due to the crash of the stock market. This caused many Americans to panic. This was not good for investors. Consumer spending and investment dropped. Many companies failed and workers were laid off. People were starving because they couldn’t work and pay for food.
