US development into two party system

    1854- The Republican party was formed over issues of slavery. The Democratic party split into two parts (North and South).

    1860- The Era of the Republicans Abraham Lincoln was elected as president and the Civil War was started. The Republican Party had control of the nation.

    1896- William McKinley (Republican) wins the presidential election, bringing votes from a wide-range of electorates. However, Bryan pushed politics to focus more on economics, rather than focusing on sectionalism.
