    Russia proudly launches Sputnick, the first satellite into orbit around earth.

    America, following in Russia's footsteps, launches their first satellite, less than a year later. The name of Amerca's first satellite was called Explorer 1

    A Russian man, Yuri Gagarin becomes the first human in space on april 12, 1961. His flight lasted 108 minutes on the vostok 1 spacecraft.

    The russians are the first to have a spaecraft on the Moon. Its name was Luna 9. Luna 9 took pictures of the moons surface so people could be sure the moon was durable enough to support the weight of a larger spacecraft.
