  • The Bay of Pigs Invasion Jan. 1, 1959

    On January 1, 1959, a young Cuban nationalist named Fidel Castro (1926-2016) drove his guerilla army into Havana and overthrew General Fulgencio Batista (1901-1973), the nation’s American-backed president. American tried to run them away but there were too many Castro troops.
  • U-2 Spy Incident 1960

    Union of Soviet Socialist Republics show down American U-2 spy plane in Soviet air space and captured the pilot Francis Gary Powers.Soviets convicted powers on espionage charges and he was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Raised tensions between the US and Soviets.
  • Peace Corps 1961

    K. issued an order which established the PC as new agency within Department of State.Sent message to Congress asking for permanent funding for agency, where trained Americans would be sent to foreign nations to help.Aid to the poor of the world. Help the peoples of interested countries in meeting their need for training people.Help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.     Nikita Khrushchev (1894-1971) led the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War, serving as premier from 1958 to 1964. The Cuban Missile Crisis began after he positioned nuclear weapons 90 miles from Florida.
