    Berlin Blockade
    The berlin blockade was an attempt by the Soviet Union to limit the ability of the US, Great Britain, and France to travel to their sectors of the city of Berlin. The Soviet Union was nervous at this time because of the United States new policy that aided Germany and other struggling European nations. The Soviet Union blocked all rail, road, and canal access to the western zones of Berlin. (9th most important)
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    The Korean War was a conflict between South Korea and North Korea. There were about 2.5 million lives lost in this war. The war became international when the soviet union supplied and advised North Korea. The War began when 75,000 soldiers from North Korean Army came across the 38th parallel. The invasion was the first military action of the Cold War, and by July US troops entered the Korean War on South Korea's behalf. (4th most important)
  • Vietnam War

    The Vietnam War was a long, costly, and divisive conflict between communist governments of North Vietnam and South Vietnam and its principal ally the US. This event intensified the Cold War, and over 3 million lost their lives. The reason for the conflict was many people in Vietnam wanted to unify the entire country under a single communist regime. (3rd most important)
  • Space Race

    20th century conflict during the cold war. A competition between the US and soviet union, and they fought to achieve superior spaceflight capability. Each side wanted better technology, military firepower, and an economic system. (2nd most important)
  • Suez Canal Crisis

    Suez Canal Crisis
    The Suez Canal Crisis began when Israeli armed forces pushed into Egypt towards the Sues Canal. Which is a valuable waterway controlled by 2/3 of oil used by Europe. Israelis was joined by French and British forces. Which damaged there relationship with the US, and brought the Soviet Union into conflict. In the end Egypt emerged Victorious as the other nations withdrew their troops in late 1956. (10th most important)
  • U-2 Incident

    U-2 Incident
    The American U-2 spy plane was shot down while flying through soviet airspace. Also the pilot Franas Gary was captured. This event caused the collapse of the summit conference in Paris between the US, soviet union, UK, and France. They claimed the US plane was an aggressive act by the United states. (5th most important)
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    The two superpowers came close to a nuclear conflict. The installation of nuclear-armed soviet missiles on cuba was the start. Then JFK informed the US of the problem, and notified them that the US was going to prepare to neutralise the threat if necessary. This was avoided though when USSR government leader Nikita Khrushchev offered to remove the missiles from Cuba to stop the conflict. (1st most important)
  • Yom Kippur War

    Yom Kippur War was the 4th war of the Arab-Israeli Wars. It was initiated by Egypt and Syria on the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur, and the war is known by many as the Ramadan War. This war drew the US and soviet union into indirect confrontation. The war consisted of a surprise attack on israeli territory by Arab coalition forces. (7th most important)
  • Soviet War in Afghanistan

    Soviet War in Afghanistan
    The War consisted of the soviet union invading afghanistan in late December 1979. The Soviet union did this in support of Afghan communist government in conflict with anti-communist muslim guerillas during the Afghan war. The war took place so that the soviet union could support the local pro-soviet government that was in afghanistan. (8th most important)
  • Soviets down Korean Air Lines Flight 007

    Soviets down Korean Air Lines Flight 007
    A flight of passengers on a jet were shot down by soviet air to air missiles on September 1st, 1983 near Sakhalin Island, Russia. The missile killed all 269 people on board. The flight was on route to seoul when it strayed 200 miles from its scheduled path. Then it entered soviet airspace. After the soviets shot down the plane they claimed it was on an intelligence gathering mission. (6th most important)
  • "Able Archer" Military exersise

    "Able Archer" Military exersise
    NATO conducted able archer 83, which was a war game. The war game was a realistically modeled nuclear attack on the soviet union. It was during a time when tensions where heightened during the Cold War following the downing of flight 007. (11th most important)
