Children With Disabilities

  • The Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Children (PARC) v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

    The U.S. district court aided in favor of these students. PARC v. Penn required that students with disabilities attend schools that publicly fund and accommodate their educational needs.
  • The individuals with Disabilities Education Act (1975)

    This act was established to make sure that students with disabilities receive free and adequate assistance while receiving their education. This act has supported the needs of the students with disabilities by making sure they receive an education in the least restrictive environment.
  • Public Law 99-457 was an amendment to the All Handicapped Children Act

    This act provided services for families of children born with disabilities. This act has allowed these families to receive services as soon as the child is born, whereas in prior years the child had to be three years old.
  • President Reagan signed the Handicapped Children’s Protection Act

    This act allowed parents of children with disabilities to be more vocal in the development of their child’s IEP. This plan has effectively assisted families of children with disabilities because they now have a voice in the educational plan for their children. Parents are also now permitted to attend the annual IEP meeting where they can voice any concerns that they may have about their child’s academic progress.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    This act was established to prevent discrimination against people with disabilities in various areas for example: employment, transportation, communications, and access to state and government programs. This program has helped children with disabilities to feel secure and not feel vulnerable when having to take care of important business in the public.
