Chennai Music Festival

  • The actual beginning

    The then Governor of Madras, Grant Duff, attended a performance of Indian music, which in many ways paved the way for native Indians to take up singing in concerts.
  • Ticketing was introduced

    1887 saw the introduction of the ticketing system by Tondaimandalam Sabha. However, the audience did not embrace this concept, and this was soon scrapped only to be revived again soon
  • The first concert

    The first Chennai music season was held to celebrate the establishment of the Music Academy
  • All India music conference

    The all India music conference was held, where a resolution was passed to establish the music academy
  • Annual event

    From 1928, organisers decided to hold the Chennai Music Season every year in December
  • Women acknowledged

    Women were handed awards for their performances for the first time by the Indian Fine Arts Society
  • More sabhas conduct events

    In 1933, for the first time, sabhas other than the music academy conducted events for the December music season
  • Two rivals unite

    The 1938 music season saw two rivals, the Madras Music Academy and the Indian Fne arts society hold a joint festival for the first time

  • NRI's make their mark

    The period of 1990's saw many Non Resident Indians, particualrly from USA, take part in the Chennai Music Season. This has continued even till today, as hundreds fly in from abroad just for the music seson
  • Federation of Sabhas

    The Federation of sabhas was set up in 1936 to promote unity amongst the sabhas or concert venues in the city during the December Season
