    Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were assassinated by a Serbian Nationalist during a parade in Sarajevo. There are many theories about what happened but it is most commonly believed that someone was trying to spark up the war. There had been a lot of tension between countries before the war.

    Battle of Marne
    Germans had started to invade France so in panic troops rushed to Paris and held them back. Eventually the Allies were successful but this caused the trench warfare to begin. Over the four years this caused many lives to be lost and for the war to become a stalemate.

    When the war broke out men had to leave their jobs and go to fight, or wealthy families couldn't afford to keep their servants so many women lost their jobs. Many women were servants. They had to deal with men leaving for war and being jobless.

    Due to losing workers, factories hired women as a last resort. The women didnt have the same rights as men when it came to working, mostly working to build ammunition for soldiers. This was the start of many job oppurtunitues for women.

    During and after the war, many female nurses were wanted to go overseas. Thousands of women were employed by this. It also created military and job oppurtunitues. This field of work was dangerous, due to going overseas and risking disease and other dangers of war.

    The government invited women to join Women's Land Army. It offered cheap female labor to farmers who had been hesitant to hire women in the first place. It employed over 260,000 women.

    Otto Ferdinand Levan was drafted and assigned to the 90th Infantry and served in the 357th regiment. Throughout his time in the war he wrote home very often, and wrote to his finacee Katherine very often as well. He was about 25 years old when he was drafted.

    Levan wrote his first letter home after being sent overseas. He talks about how that morning, they got up early and started to dig trenches. He talks about not seeing his comrades for weeks at a time. He also talks about his finacee.

    Women workers on busses and trams went on strike in order to get the same rights as men. It was the first equal pay strike in the UK which was led and won by women. The women then got equal rights.

    U.S. President Woodrow Wilson gave a speech at a conjoined meeting with Congress, talking about ending the war peacefully. He spoke about opening up ocean borders and becoming trade partners with other countries. His most importsnt point, 14, was about starting an international organization that keeps the peace between nations.

    Levan sent his last letter
    Levan wrote home for the last time. In his letter his wrote that he had a lot to talk about with his family, which is sadly ironic. He also talks about having a dream about his mother and his sister laying out his clothes, which is also ironic.

    A few days earlier, Levan had been on patrol when he was fatally injured. He died from his injuries, but these injuries were never specified. The Doughboy Poster was made in memory of his death.

    Germany formally surrenders, causing all of the other nations to call a truce and stop fighting. Germany had been running low on food and had lost its allies after the Spring Offense failed, causing the eventual surrender.During this time terms of peace were discussed, leading to the Treaty of Versailles.

    Levan's commander sent a letter to his father to inform him of his son's death. His letter states the Levan was well respected and loved, showing the reader Levan's character. The date of the letter being sent compared to when he died shows how fast information got around back then.

    Germany and Allied forces signed the treaty to officially end the war. The U.S. had objected to the terms of the treaty so we did not sign the treaty, instead negotiating our own settlement with Germany. This Treaty sets the stage for World War 2.
