    In 1914 the war officially started with the other countries. Franz Ferdinand was assasinated which helped start the war. The war started in Europe and then moved to different countries.

    On this day the boat Lusitania entered the war zone. A german submarine ship sunk this boat. This killed nearly 1,200 people including 128 Americans

    Boats where very useful, some boats were able to hold airplanes aboard. In this picture a Curtiss model AB-2 plane was leaving for war. The first time the first time the has ever happened was in 1915.

    The United Statets entered the war in 1917. This is when we actually went into battle with others. This was also the year that the Selective Service Act was passed.

    Nathan was 15 when he first joined the Navy. He had went in as a apprentice. A navy officer came up to him asked for his age then asked if he wanted to join the Navy.

    When he first joined the Navy he didnt know how to swim. His training ship taught him how to swim! After his training he was then sent off to go to his first assignment.

    Nathan's first assignment was to be the cabin boy for the U.S.S. Adams. He was one out of the 36 sailors on the ship. The boat was bound for China in December.

    Durning WW1 troops used a aconstic locator with large horns that amplified sounds. The sounds were monitored by a crew member in headphones. This device was later surpassed by the Radar.

    Some brave soliders were lifted into the sky by giant kites. The kites were lifted into the sky by giant perkins man at camps. The german and french use these to put troops to the front line.

    after his first assignment he returned to new york. He went to a Navy ball where he met his wife. They soon got married in october of that year.

    In march riots started breaking out in Russia. They wanted to leave and get their country out of war. After they settled a tready on this date they were forced to surrender out of the war.

    Women were also very helpful in the war. They served as American red cross nurses to help the hurt and wounded from battle. In this picture he is getting a cigarette while hurt from war.

    By the end of the war the US spent 32 billion. Congress then decided to raise income tax rates. We then got 20 billion in bonds.

    Submarines could be very useful for war in WW1. Many people wanted them but didnt have them so they fought to take others. on November 26 UB-148 was surrendered to the British.

    Nathan served in many ways durning WW1 and he says the brutal fighting was all for his country. For all his work he did he was honered by getting a poem named and wrote about him. This shows our appreation towards him in all the wars he served in.
