    On January 19, 1917, the British intercepted a telegram that was being sent from Alfred Zimmermann to Mexico. The British cracked the code and it talked about the two countries becoming an alliance to go against the United States so Mexico could regain land. The British eventually sent the Zimmermann note to the United States causing an outcry once the U.S. made it public.
