    Three European scientists persuade Einstein to send a letter Roosevelt. The letter concerns the details of Germany developing a nuclear weapon. The letter outlines these events.

    In Europe, the war begins. It first starts with Germany invading Poland.
  • Paris Falls and France Surrenders

    Paris Falls and France Surrenders
    The first air raids on Paris began on June 3, 1940. Tanks rush into Paris. Refugess ran, and the government abandoned the people. Marshal Henri Petain takes control and surrenders to the Germans. They are forced to sign an armistice.

  • Breaking the Enigma Codes

    The British begin to regularly break into Germany's military plans.
  • U.S. Begins Atomic Bomb Project

    Supposedly, this project cost $2 billion and was the largest one ever in U.S. history. Canadian and British scientists came to help. This was also called the Manhattan Project.
  • Japanese Bomb Pearl Harbor

    Japanese Bomb Pearl Harbor
    The Japanese attack Pearl Harbor on this date, while negotiations are taking place between the Japanese and the Americans. Only 29 Japanese air craft drowned. The U.S. enters the war against Japan. The U.S. ally themselves with the British.

    Germany delcares war on the U.S. Italy declares war on the U.S. They have both then declared war on the U.S.
  • German Abandons its Nuclear Weapon Project

    Germany abandons its development. Hitler claims its a Jewish project, one only the Jews made supposedly. Since he destroyed a large amount of their race, there was no need for it anymore.
  • Battle of the Midway

    Due to the effective cracking of code, Admiral Chester Nimitz sends a force for Midway Island. Three planes go, and one if destroyed. However, 5,000 Japanese men are killed and their threat to the East is over.
  • U.S. Takes Over Manhattan Project

    U.S. Army General Leslie Groves is put in charge of this program. Groves picks a scientific director.
  • Battle of the Atlantic

    Battle of the Atlantic
    German U-Boats patrolled the Atlantic against the British in an effort to stop supplies from America from ever reaching Britain. The German navy under the command of Grand Admiral Karl Doenitz, carried out total unrestricted submarine warfare to cut off Britain's imports and military supplies. The Allies developed a convoy system where merchant ships were guarded by destroyer escorts. The British developed a system for detecting the U-Boats.

  • Roosevelt Announces New Policy

    Roosevelt announces the "Unconditional Surrender" policy. This meant they will only accept a certain kind of surrender from Germany and Japan.
  • D-Day: Allies land in Normandy, France

    D-Day: Allies land in Normandy, France
    After months of preparation, the Allies land in France and begin their assualt. Led by Dwight D. Eisenhower, over 200,000 British, American, and Canadian forces landed at beaches named Gold, Juno, Sword, Utah, and Omaha. Two months later, the French capital fell.

    Roosevelt and Churchill both secretly agree to use the bombs. They don't tell the Soviet Union either. They both agree to use the bombs once available.

    Potsdam Declaration is Rejected
    Japan rejects the warning of the future attack of the nuclear bomb and does not surrender. Roosevelt proposes an "unconditional surrender." Japan refuses and does not comply. The minister states they will fight for the successful conclusion of the war.

    The Soviet Union enters the war. They declare war on Japan and invade Manchuria.

    The U.S. Bomb Nagasaki
    The U.S. bomb Nagasaki. Three days before, they had bombed Hiroshima. They kill between 40,000 - 75,000 people.
