    In the summer of 1914, airplanes were 11 years old. Being made this early in time, airplanes were slow and weak and could barely lift the weight of one pilot.

    On June 28, 1914, the Archduke of Austria-Hungary, Franz Ferdinand, was assassinated by Serbian terrorists. When the Serbians killed him, Austria-Hungary demanded money for the death of their Archduke.

  • Austria Launches Attack On Belgrade

    When Serbia does not give in to Austria-Hungary's demands for the death of their archduke, Austria launched an artillery shell attack on Belgrade, Serbia.

    Belgian Resistance
    Germany crosses the border into Belgium to quickly overtake the nation and attack France, but when the Germans get into Belgium, the Belgians resisted and towns were burned and civilians were exucated.

    Since England is alies with Belgium, they declare war on Germany.
  • Belgium Capitol Is Captured

    When the Belgians resisted, they stopped the Germans a little bit, but the capitol was lost to the German because they were not strong enough.

    Japan is an ally of Britain's, so Japan declares war on Germany.
  • British Lure Germany/ Battle of Bight

    The British was bored and lured Germany into a fight. The result of this was: Germans = lose three cruisers & 1,200 men

  • The First Major Sea Battle

    When they had the war in the North Sea in a corner called Heligoland Bight. This helped the Germans out a lot because it was excellent for shelter for the German naval bases. They hardly ever left the base for this reason.
  • Battle of Masurian Lakes

    On Sept. 9, 1914, the Battle of the Masurian Lakes happens when the Germans and Russians meet up again. It was just like Tannanberg. The result was the death of 125,000 Russian men.
  • Dardanelles

    Russia couldn't send their bread to England, so on March 8, 1915, the British and the French could not recapture the strait.
  • Australian and New Zealand

    When the Australian and New Zealand troops help the British attack, it took over a year for the British to surrender. This cost hundreds of lives on each side.

    Lusitania is sunk by Germans, killing 128 Americans. This angers America.

    London Pact
    The London Pact was signed because in April 1915, Italy went and offered to join the Central Powers in exchange for 6 territories . This lead to Italy declaring war on Austria-Hungary.
  • Machine Gun Airplane Is Made

    When they made the machine gun airplane, two German pilots were the first to shooot another aircraft down. Since they made the machine gun airplane, they were the first to shoot another aircraft.

    They had the Battle of Verdun and this is when the Germans used mustard gas.

    Romania Joins The War
    When Romania joins the Allies, they declare war on Austria Hungary. Since they joined the war, Bulgaria has become an enemy, and so Bulgaria declares war on Romania.
  • Germany Lifts Restrictions

    Germany lifts all restrictions on submarine warfare, so U-boats can sink any and all boats/ships. This was between boats/ships crossing the Atlantic from the U.S. and Canada.
  • Housatonic Sunk

    Since the Germans changed their boat policy, the Germans sunk the Housatonic on February 13, 1917.
  • US Enters War

    Germans pushed U.S. to enter the war and so finally Congress declared war on Germany.
  • Italy Retreats

    Before the Battloe of Caporetto, it was a draw, so they had to fight again. Because of tbis, Italy had to retreat.
  • Mustard Gas

    When they retreated from the war with the British, they were angered and started using mustard gas at the battle of Passchendoele.
  • Long Range Weapons Made

    The Germans made long range weapons. The effect was when they launched the weapons artillery. This killed 250 Parisian civilians. They launched these on March 3, 1918.

    This ended on April 29, 1918. After the British and French fought the Germans, both sides suffered low morale and the troops were running out of energy. The result was a German victory.
