    Alliances

    The six major powers of Europe were split into two alliances which formed the opposing sides of World War One. The two alliances were the Triple Entente - made up of Britain, France, and Russia, and the Triple Alliance, made up of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy.

    Trench Warfare and New Weapons

    Trench warfare is a type of land warfare where occupied fighting lines stood in trenches to shelter them from small artillery. Trench warfare was first introduced on the Western Front during World War 1. Many new types of military technology were introduced as well, including tanks, flamethrowers, poison gas, tracer bullets, aircraft carriers, and pilotless drones.

    The Western Front

    The Western Front was the main theatre of war during WW1. After the war began in August of 1914, the German army opened the Western Front by invading Luxembourg and Belgium. After this they were able to gain control of important French industrial regions. Following the Race to the Sea, both opposing sides dug a line of fortified trenches from the Swiss frontier with France to the North Sea. This became known as the Western Front.

    The Schlieffen Plan
    The Schlieffen Plan was the thinking behind the German invasion of France and Belgium. Germany had started writing the Schlieffen Plan in 1897, and it took nine years to finalize. It was based on the theory that France was weak and Russia was strong, but took a long time to mobilize it's army. This plan was mostly unsuccessful.
