  • Austria-Hungary and Russia go to war

    Austria-Hungary declares waar on Russia after the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife.
  • Russia Mobilizes

    Russia mobilizes its army to intervene against Austria-Hungary in favor of its ally, Serbia. This move starts a chain reaction that leads to the mobilization of the rest of the European Great Powers, and inevitably to the outbreak of hostilities.
  • The Beginning of World War 1

  • The Christmas Truce

    In some sectors of the Western Front, there were a series of unofficial ceasefires between German and British forces. German and British soldiers began to exchange seasonal greetings and songs between their trenches and on occasion they would walk across no mans land and mingle.

  • Italy enters World War 1

    Italy declares war on Austria-Hungary, entering World War I even though Italy declared itself neutral in the beginning. Italy would receive control over territory on its border with Austria-Hungary stretching from Trentino through the South Tyrol to Trieste by the terms of the Treaty of London.
  • Germany's Pledge to the U.S.

    Germany maked the Sussex Pledge to the US, promising to stop sinking Merchant ships without warning; adding that the pledge wasn't permanent.

  • Zimmermann Telegram

    Zimmermann Telegram is passed to the US by Britain,containing the German proposal of an alliance with Mexico against the US.
  • USA declares war on Germany

    President Woodrow Wilson asked Congress for a declaration of war against Germany. Congress agreed and the US went to war with Germany. Events that lead to this included the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915, the Zimmerman Telegram sent to Mexico by Germany in 1917 and the resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare by Germany.
