  • Proclamation of Neutrality

    An announcement made by George Washington declaring the United States neutral (in the middle basically) of the conflict between France and Great Britain.
  • XYZ Affair

    President John Adams came across a foreign conflict he has never seen before. He sent two diplomats from America to meet French officials to put out this conflict. The foreign minister decided to have an act of bribery involved, making three agents (X,Y,Z) tell American's that they needed some sort of payment before they could meet.
  • Convention of 1800

    France and America were completely engaged in the fact that they "hated" each other, there was an a peace agreement designed to end this fued. This was called the Convention of 1800.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    President Jefferson purchased the Louisiana territory from Napoleon. This $15 million purchase made the United States DOUBLE in size!!
  • Embargo Act

    This act stopped trade between the United States, France, and Great Britain. Considering these were the two fueding countries, this made much sense. Although, this act actually ruined the American economy and it was hard for Americans to pick back up and get back on their feet again. The economy was horrible at this time.

    War of 1812

    This war was between the United States and Great Britain. There were many causes of this war including British attempts to restrict US trade, America's desire to expand it's territory, etc. FUN FACT: The White House was burned down during this war!!!
  • Treaty of Ghent

    This treaty ended the war without either side winning or losing. America's dedication to protecting itself and it's people was recognized and respected by other nations. Some also call this the "Second War of Independence"!
  • Monroe Doctrine

    This stated that the United States would not tolerate Europe to intervene in affairs of any independent nation in America. Also, they considered further colonization in America as aggressive, so none will be further applied. America is the leader in world affairs!!
