Julia Margaret Cameron gets her first camera
Heillbrun timeline on Cameron. The photo is a portrait of her by Henry Herschel Hay Cameron, 1870Julia Margaret Camera received her first camera from her daughter and son-in-law at the age of forty-eight. They appended a thoughtful note to their gift: "It may amuse you, Mother, to try to photograph during your solitude at Freshwater [a village in southern England]". Cameron came to use the camera for more than amusement: her photographs demonstrated that women (like men) and photographs (like paintings) should be viewed as more than ama amatuer-ish--indeed even as "serious."
