William Golding

    William Gerald Golding was born in Cornwall, England to Mildred and Alec Golding. His mother was a strong supporter of the British suffrage movement and his father was a school teacher.

    William began his college career at brasenose college at Oxford studying science. In his third year of studying science at the college he decided he would follow his heart and switch to the literature program.
  • Graduation

    At Oxford Golding sparked an interest in poetry and began to write poems, a few of these were published. In 1935 William then graduated from Oxford with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a diploma in education.
  • Early Career

    Golding was always strongly encouraged to follow in his fathers footsteps and become a teacher. Eventually, he decided he would and took a job teaching English at Bishop Wordsworths school.
  • Joining Army

    Even though William was so fond of teaching he decided to leave his job and join the Royal Navy and fight in World War 1. Since Golding spent so much time at sea in the Navy he fell In love with it.
  • Published

    After being rejected over and over again William finally published his first novel, Lord of the Flies. This novel ended up being his most acclaimed novel.
  • Nobel Prize

    After Golding retired from his passion of teahching,Peter Brook made a film of the novel. Golding was later awarded the 1983 Nobel prize for Literature
  • Death

    Golding spent his last years relaxing with his wife in Cornwall and continued writing. On June 19 1993 Golding died of a heart attack in Perranarworthal, Cornwall
