    William Golding was born on September 11,1911 in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall. He was raised next door to a graveyard in a 14th century home.

    Golding received his early education at Marlborough Grammer School. At age 12, he unsuccessfully attempted to write a novel. He was frustrated about this and found an outlet by bullying his peers.

    Golding wanted to follow his father's footsteps so in 1935 babe began teaching English and philosophy at Bishop Wordsworth's School. His teaching experiences would later be an inspiration for his novel Lord of the Flies.

    Golding joined the navy to fight in World War ll in 1940. He spent around 6 years on a boat and developed a lifelong romance with sailing.

    On June 19, 1993, Golding died of a heart attack in Perranarworthal, Cornwall. He was survived by his wife and their two children, David and Judith.
