France took control of Vietnam creating the French Indochina -
Establishment of the Viet Minh
Ho Chi Minh and other communists established Viet Minh, a league for the independence of Vietnam. It was aimed to resist the French and Japanese occupation of Vietnam. -
First US casualty
The first American casualty in Vietnam, Lt. Col. A Peter Dewey, was mistakenly shot and killed having been taken for a Frenchman by the Viet Minh. -
Guerilla War is formed
Ho Chi Minh rejects a French proposal stating Vietnam can have a limited self-government, but they didn't like those terms and a guerrilla war against the French begins. -
Truman Doctrine was Placed
Truman's forgien policy was placed stating, the United states was to assist any country threatened by communnism. -
Truman Sends Help
US President, Harry Truman, expanded military assistance against the communists in Indochina. Naval, Air Force, and Army attaches were assigned. -
MacArthur helped the French against Vietnam
US General, Douglas MacArthur, loaned the French 12 airplanes to begin Operation Castor. The planes flew over Dien Bien Phu in the northwest of Vietnam. -
Geneva Conference
In an attempt to maintain peace and unify Korea, the US, UK, China, and the Soviet Union meet at the Geneva Conference. Which later happens to separate North and South Vietnam from each other. -
Kennedy Sends Help
President, John F. Kennedy, sends US Army Special forces to assist in the training of South Vietnam soldiers. -
First American comabt troops were sent to Vienam
Two battalions of about 3,500 Marines waded ashore on Red Beach 2 in Vietnam.
