What Lead to the Civil War

  • Compromise of 1850

    This is when California wanted to enter the Union. If they had entered it would have upset the balance of slave states and free states. Henry Clay proposed that California becomes a free state and they should create territory in what is now Utah.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    This made slaves escaping harder and punishments worse. This was passed with the Compromise of 1850 by Henry Clay.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Harriet Beecher Stove wrote this book. it was to encourage anti-slavery. She released this book in responce to the Fugitive Slave Act.
  • Kansa-Nebraska Act

    This made it so territories could vote if they wanted or not wanted to have slavery. Stephen Douglas proposed this idea. This helped end the Missouri Commpromise.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    This was a dispute between anti-slavery and slavery. It involved John Brown and William Quantrill. They were deciding what Kansas and Missouri should be. The North wanted them to be anti-slavery and the South wanted them to be pro slavery.
  • Caning of Charles Sumner

    Involved Preston Brooks and Charles Sumner. This lead to a civil war. Charles wanted to end slavery and Preston did not agree. Charles attacked two slave owners and one of them were related to Brooks. So Brooks arranged an attack on Sumner.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    It involved Dred Scott. He lived in an anti-slavery state on anti-slavery territory but someone was trying to make him into a slave. This did not create a war but pushed us closer to one.
  • Lincoln/Douglas Debates

    Lincoln and Douglas was running for senate. Douglas won the senate position but Lincoln ended up being president.
  • Raid on Harpers Ferry

    This involved John Brown. He was against slavery and want the slaves to revolt. He wanted to use violance because he belived an slave owner deserved that kind of fate
  • Secession

    This is the forming of the Confederation and the Union. The Confederation was the South and the Union was the North. Lincoln did everything in his power to get the Confederation to join again because he belivied the split would be the downfall of America.
  • Election of 1860

    This created a split in the Democratic party because the North and South had different beliefs. The republicans picked Lincoln because he had no intentions of messing with slavery and we wanted everything done by the books.

    Battle of Fort Sumter

    This was the first civil war battle. The South won this battle, the South also had more soldiers. Before the North had attacked they ran out of supplies and they still did not leave so it led to a battle with the North.
  • Underground Railroad

    This was the path created to help slaves escape from their owners. It helped them get to anti-slavery territory. They could only travel at night and if they got caught and the people helping them got caught there would be serious consenquences.
