Week 3 - Timeline 1 - Bertrand Russell - Born May 18, 1872 - Died February 2, 1970

  • "Principles of Mathematics" is Published

Russell says that one aim of this book is to provide proof that pure math,"deals exclusively with concepts definable in terms of a very small number of fundamental logical concepts, and that all its propositions are deducible from a very small number of fundamental logical principles" (xl).
  • "The Problems of Philosophy" is Published

Russell poses a question. He identifies that though the question seems to be simple to answer, it is actually not so simple to answer. He asks if there is any knowledge so certain that no reasonable person could doubt. He then says that when you attempt to answer this question, you end up having to be very philosophical in answering it. In other words, critical, and not in the dogmatic way that science goes about answering a question like this (1).
  • "An Inquiry Into Meaning and Truth" is Published

Russell wants us to go along with him when he simplifies hearing a word, speaking a word, imagining a word and then proceeds to explain why it is we might hear, say, or imagine a word. He also says that we all speak for different reasons and also refuse to speak for different reasons, though the reasons might sometimes be the same. He says this in regards to universality (23-27).
  • Is Awarded Nobel Prize for Literature

"Russell was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1908, and re-elected a fellow of Trinity College in 1944. He was awarded the Sylvester medal of the Royal Society, 1934, the de Morgan medal of the London Mathematical Society in the same year, the Nobel Prize for Literature, 1950." • Message to Future Generations

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihaB8AFOhZo In this video, Russell advises people like me (of a future generation) to look thoroughly at the facts for what is true and not only at what we want to believe is true.
